First Coffee Table
Hi all,
Finally got around to finishing my coffee table, which is also my first decent woodwork project since becoming addicted.
It's all made from 90x35 radiata pine from the hardware shop and finished with 2 coats of Ubeaut sanding sealer, Wattyl Baltic Pine stain, and several coats of Minwax wipe-on satin poly.

Love it. A coffee table now becomes alive and has movement (only the good sort) and grace and looks brilliant!!
Top marks for your finish too. glad to see you did the shellac, stain then poly. I bet the poly is more even too, for having been applied on top of the shellac.
So, now that you are thoroughly addicted to woodworking, what's nextBox Challenge 2011 - Check out the amazing Boxes!

top job.
How did you shape the legs?
I've been tempted to try that brand of wipe on poly? Are you happy with it?

Thanks for the comments.
Yeah Wendy the shellac sealer made all the difference - thanks for the advice. I've been given a list of projects: another coffee table, a blanket box, and an entertainment unit to house my son's many gaming consoles (that'll be a challenge). All are wanted by christmas. Ahhh... so much to learn in such a short time.
Boz, I made a template of the shape I wanted, transferred it onto the leg posts, which are two bits of pine glued together, cut the shape on the bandsaw, and then sanded, and sanded, and sanded. The wipe-on poly is very easy to apply and gives a very smooth, even finish.
Regards, Kev

Absolutely fabulous piece.
I like how there is no knots on the radiata. Did you do what I normally do and spend hours going through the racks of the hardware store and slowly pick the timber you wanted?

Wendy I'm still trying to justify my thicknesser, Triton gear and router. Although.........a few extra toys wouldn't go astray.
Timberbits - Yeah I spent quite a while looking for knot free timber. I bought what I could but still had to cut out quite a few knots. Probably I guess about 20% wastage but @ $2.30/lm it's cheap enough.
As my skills improve I'll lash out and try using some quality timber.

I normally hit bunnies pretty hard when they open a new pack of 4" x 2". I think it's under $2/m at bunnies. The guys at bunnies all know me now and just leave me alone when I am going through the rack, because they know I will return the pack to it's original neat and tidy condition.

Mate I really like this coffee table Kev, you did a top job mate Especially like that it was made from Pine, something that is readily available to basically all of us. An inexpensive project which still turns out a treat!
Cheers,
WILL
