Good job. Maybe the legs could be a bit of barky stump, or curved branches, or...a zenny shaped piece of sandstone? Cool anyway. BTW my kids would have that centre filled with milo, M&Ms and other stuff in no time.

    Hi Dan

I tend to look at furniture from the 'ease of cleaning' aspect (rather spend time woodworking than cleaning) ... the rocks? ... just take the table outside and put the hose through them! Nice table and love the timber .

I think the top looks great too . Good contrast of colours and lots of character . I agree with the other comments about the legs . Perhaps some salvaged timber for these too . May'be some ideas borrowed from rustic type chairs /benches

I've just become an optimist . Iv'e made a 25 year plan -oopps I've had a few birthdays - better make that a 20 year plan

    OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooo!! NICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Different, definitely rustic and solid. Looks like it should be easy to change if you decide to remodel any part of the coffee table. The white gravel is a great contrast. Have to agree with Tikki that cleaning it could be interesting.
    Great work Dan and Tom!

I have to thank Bob Wilson for suggesting that I post this pic of the coffee table! It is great to see the amount of discussion it has generated on and off the forum. Whilst it is definately not woodworking's finest, it is meant to create inspiration to think outside the box. I have really enjoyed hearing your thoughts, so thanks!

Since making it over a year ago, I have since logged on to this forum and from the things I have learnt here online, if I were to have another go at it, it would be a rather different beast - with better legs for one!

You know, I wished there was a programme on TV (free to air) that showcased our craft - woodworking - whether it be turning or furniture making whatever. More than a segment on Better Homes and Gardens, (I am sometimes mortified to see that guy using MDF for outdoor areas!!), but a half hour show at least. Anyone out there in media? Packer? Murdoch? Are either of you secret woodworkers? They have shows for gardeners and chefs!

I would encourage you all to post the good, bad and the in between!

    Cheers
    Dan

    Dantom,

My first impression was “Yes, lovely timber top but the legs are a bit ordinary”. Maybe its the end-grain that turned me off. The colour of wood and the end grain make it look like “cheap Oregon”. I will definitely hide the end grain next time

But then I looked at it again and again. And I thought “It is beautiful!”. The pictures did not do the table justice.

    Love your work mate.

Come my way then, theres a fair bit of white quartz in the flinders rangers above my area... in the creek beds too, although its in streaks/deposits in the sandstone.

Would love to be able to have the "open aired" table top at my place. Would give it 2 days before the creek resembled the bottom of a school bag.
