Default Made a couple of mallets

Hi all, had some time to spare so made up a couple of mallets out of some hardwood I had in the shed. Two of them are for wood chiselling and the other one is a meat tenderizing mallet for the missus, the handles were turned on a lathe and the meat mallet has 6mm stainless plates on each end, one of them is grooved and the other is just flat. I don't think that there is a steak in the country that the missus won't be able to beat into submission with this one!

    Cheers

Thank you, the handles go through the block and glued in using Titebond 3.

    Thanks Christos

The bigger wood mallet handle is 27cm up to the bottom of the head which is 9.5cm tall
The smaller one has a 21cm handle up to the bottom of the head which is 6.5cm tall
The meat mallet is 21.5cm up to the bottom of the head and the head 5.5cm tall

    Cheers

Nicely done. How did you decide on the angles of the strike faces and the handle diameters?

I had to quit using a meat mallet = there was never anyone around to clean up the "meat spray" except me (and the cat when I'm not looking.) That's OK, BBQ bison rarely needs more than a fork.

Hi Robson, with the two mallets for chiseling, I just planed the hammer face till it looked right, I know that it's not a scientific way of determining it but it worked for me, as for the handle diameter, I just turned it down till it was comfortable to hold. Seeing as the two wood mallets are for me to use when chiseling wood, there isn't going to be a lot of force on the down swing, so it will be would be hard to break the hardwood handle as most of the force will be on the head. If I do need a lot more force that may break the handle then I am using the wrong mallet and should be using a Gympie hammer instead! Either way should it happen, it is simple enough to just cut the old handle off at the head, redrill out the head and glue in a new one.

I watched by my wife's side as she tried out the meat tenderizer last night, and it worked well, requiring only a couple of light taps and it was done, much better than the old light alloy one she use to use, truth be told, I was a bit disappointed and expecting a lot more swings like she used to with the old one, but she said no, they were done, so who am I to argue with the wife in the kitchen!. By the way, to stop meat splatter just put a layer of glad wrap over the meat and hit the meat through it.

    Cheers
