    Default Cubby house

I am building this for my little girl’s 4th birthday which is still 4 months away. After seeing the construction of my in-law’s house, I realise that it is really not that hard. (Even builders are smart enough to do it. )

    Design
It needs to be big enough for all of us to sleep in there  . She always wanted to camp outside the house. I want it big enough for all the cousins to play together and have a fun Sunday afternoon.

    Cost
A small shed like that is going to cost something. I used mainly recycled timber to keep the cost down and was fortunately enough to be able to keep some of left-over from the new house next door. For example a aluminum window was not used and it cost my father-in-law $700.

    Bricks: Free
    Window: Free
    Colorbond tin roof: Free
    Cladding: Free
Frame: $100 (150m of recycle OZ hard wood and Oregon)
2 sheets of yellow tongue: $90
Jarrah decking: $40 (second grade fence piling from Bunnings.)
Paints: $90 (3 tins marked down from $200. Thanks again Mr Bunnings)
    4 sheets of weatherboards: $100
    Screws, nails, ant-caps, etc: $100.

I originally budgeted $300 for the job but I think I will do it for just under $600.

Brick work – a shaky start
I have never done it before. Playing with bricks and mud is so not me. My hands are too delicate for it. But honestly I did not enjoy it at all. Sorry Ozwinner for letting you down. My father-in-law’s comment sums it up very correctly “bloody awful”. Hmmm did we really build the great wall???

    Flooring
After putting hundreds of padding  , I did manage to get the floor flat and level. I was going to use Oregon for the floor but I just didn’t think it would be strong enough. Heavy hard wood made it a lot stronger and stable too.

    Walls & roof

Well it is pretty straight forward. It is a little bit hard to do it all by myself but I managed. Do you like the coffee table leg on the top of the roof? I knew it would be usefully one day.

    Cladding & tin roof
    So far so good.

    What’s next?
More cladding, roof, internal walls, veranda, fence, painting. I think it should be 3 to 4 weeks away.

I couldn’t hide it from her so I guess it won’t be a surprise present.

    I will keep you updated.

    Cheers.

Good going, keep it up. Fantastic the recycling bit isn't and a lot cheaper. I built a shed like that many years ago and I still use it for storage long after the girls have grown up.

Geez, Wongo, that cubby's nicer than my actual house! Love yer garden, too.
    Your daughter must be thrilled.

    Regards,
    Rusty.

Nice going Wongo. With only a few minor changes you could have had a new workshop

If he gets it without working for it; he's a parasite; and if he accumulates it after a life time of hard work, people call him a fool who never got anything out of life."

Nice job Wongo, but you've gone about it all wrong! What you need to do is buy lots of big tools and machinery, and give the boxes to Jasmine to build her own cubby.

What? You've just done that? The new cubby is really your new workshop? OK, you're a step ahead of me.
