Cubby house - WIP
Here are some pics of the cubby house I am building for the kids. It is supposed to be a Christmas present (that they know about - bit hard to hide), but I don't know if I will have it completely finished by then.
1. The base. Cypress framing on some steel posts I fabricated. The posts are concreted a minimum of 500mm deep. The actual holes are between 600 and 800 deep - 450 diameter.
2. The framing was done in the shed prior. I had to do this because I was waiting to get a water tank delivered and it had to go in before I could start on the cubby foundations. This gave me somewhat of a head start by the time the tank arrived.
3. The framing is up and the roof framing is on but not yet raised.
4. Raised roof - it's now starting to look like it's supposed to.
Lots more work still to do ... I'll post more pics when I get them.Cheers.
Vernon.

Looks great vernon,
I am just about to start a very similar project for my daughters birthday in Feb (have been collecting bits and pieces and had some timber delivered yesterday).
Couple of quick questions:
1) How far apart have you spaced the rafters? (BTW I like the way you have checked the purlins into them - very neat) what was your main reason for doing this rather than just have them sit on top? Are you trying to eliminate the need for fascia boards/flashing?
2) I was going to use 230 wide simple fibre cement cladding, what are you using?
3) What did you use for the flooring? Ply? Thickness?
Will keep an close eye on this thread with interest
Cheers

Hi Joel,
Over the "main" section they are spaced at 1150 (3 in total) and the veranda is about 700. There wasn't any overriding reason I checked in the purlins - I just liked the look.
I am using Hardie Primeline Heritage fc cladding. It is a double board wide profile and has a cover of 278mm
The main section has yellow tongue chipboard flooring (19mm thick) and the verandah has 19mm decking boards.
I've started putting on the cladding so I will try and get some more pics this afternoon.Cheers.
Vernon.

Nice work Vernonv I built my grand daughter a cubby about 3 years ago for Christmas. Yeah, its a bit hard to hide isn't it I had the same problem and I didn't think I would get it finished in time for the Christmas but just about managed it. Your kids will have a lot of fun with that for many years to come.
Reality is no background music.
Cheers John

The kids must be excited.
Plenty of room for their friends too.
Will you insulate it for your chilly winters?Scally

I like what I see.
Great job Vernon. It is a fun project isn't it.
I'd like to share with you the same crazy project I did 3 years ago.

Thanks for the comments everyone.
I hope this cubby will last them well into their teenage years. We intend to put power and light in there when we get power put to the shed. That way they can go up there to read, relax, play music or whatever.
My lovely wife has recommended that we start calling it the "Loft" (very posh) as she reckons a teenager would much prefer to spend time in the "Loft" rather than in the "Cubby".
I'll have to grab a pic of the view from up there - it's go one of the best views on the place.
I was thinking of insulating and lining the inside, as it will get a bit cold in there in winter (and probably hot during summer).Cheers.
Vernon.

Ivan - I am going to make an angled ladder type arrangement in the middle of the front of the cubby. I want something that they can hold onto as the climb it and something that is not too steep (i.e. not vertical).
Mike - You're spot on ... just started raining , hence why I am inside typing this. Tried to access your link but it didn't work.
I have got the roof on (except for barge capping) and the front and back walls almost complete. If/when the rain stops I will head back out.
Thanks all for the comments.Cheers.
Vernon.

Thanks Vernon, the link is working from here ok. Try typing the address into the line at the top of the page as it appears on your screen and it should work. If not just Google "mickygs gallery" and that will bring up the site.
Its raining here too but around Coonabarabran, Orange etc they have had big rain 120,140 ml.

Vernon,
Pull ya finger out and finish it so I can move in.
I must have been deprived as a child
I had a cardboard box from a new washing machine that my Mum bought.
It had the cutouts printed on the out side so you could cut out the windows and door.
Your kids are going to enjoy the cubby big time. It's a great looking project and well built.
