Thanks Anthony for the kind comments. I'd definitely make this kind of box again. Redbox, (though you'd never lift) appeals as do Rose Mahogany and Mahogany Gum. Of the lighter timbers, I like the idea of Birdseye Huon, Oak, Fijian Kauri and of course Maple. Either Birdseye or Canadian Rock Maple. ( I like the Canadian, its easier to work with). I have an idea for creating wooden hinges for external use, using either a Domino or a Leigh F1 finger joint jig at 1/8 or 1/4 inch. Both doable. It was actually great fun (for me anyway) to produce Red Cedar dowels by cutting the wood on a bandsaw, then tapping the lengths through a nut just over 8mm and sanding back till there was a tight fit.

Splines look like a hand saw and chisel job? a good job too.

Unfortunately, I'm not that good. The mortises were cut using a Domino, then the edges filed to make them square. The splines themselves were cut to width on a Carbatec 17" BS and then cut to 45 degrees on a Makita LS1214 305mm SCMS, using a Blue Mak 60 tooth blade. I find this blade far superior to the normal Mak blades and also to some others I've tried.
I thought I should also let people know where I got the Maple and how much it costs per LM.

Cost for 200x25mm was approx $32.00/m. They have widths up to about 230mm and have some stock kept "out the back". Ian is the guy to talk to in the yard. Great guy and very knowledgable. Been there for 25+ years.
