    Default Damascus/ironwood knife

One day i got struck down with the idea of contrasting ironwood with damascus steel in a knife. I bought the materials off ebay and after two months of working in my spare time, its done

The handle is Lignum Vitae, the blade an unknown mild steel mix of around 175 layers, the rivets and guard are sterling silver. The sheath is bound leather. A tiny bit of cleaning up is needed but iam going to let this thing breath for a few weeks before looking at it again.
Theres also potential for some sort of exotic stone to be set in near the base of the handle over the rivet in the 5th photo. I'll do some shopping around during the week .

are you sure it is mild steel i wouldn't think that could hold an edge?? is it the traditional japanese way of putting mild steele laminated with a high carbon tool steel edge.:confused:

The shaping and finishing of the handle look very luxurious, and the texture of the metal blade is beautiful. How did you achieve that effect?
Those are my principles, and if you don't like them . . . well, I have others.

Depending on what kind of use the knife would have, it could be hardened through tempering it.

And yes its similar to the japanese method. It might be a steel/nickle mix. Iam not sure.

The handle has a really nice feel to it. As for the blade? Its made up of many layers and folds of different metals. There are all sorts of patterns that can be done through twisting, folding etc.

When you file the resulting bar it cuts through the layers in a similar way to wood grains. Unfortunately the only way to see the effect is to apply an acid etch to the surface. This eats away at the softer metals and leaves the harder ones. Bit of a tease really.
