Of course, the old fashioned way was to cut a rip saw tooth pattern in the side rails and fit the shelf into those. That would be even easier.

Nice work once again Jacko. Love the shelf insert. Logged that one in the old noggin for later...
I see how you made the female, but how did you make the rounded ends on the male? They seem too perfect to be made with a jigsaw... Or was it just patience and a good eye? Bandsaw and an inverted beltsander?
Awwww go one. Tell me!

OK OK! here is the "magic method" I used a forstner bit of the correct size
(3/4") on the rear side of the support, just penetrating about 0.5 mm. Then to the bandsaw (1/8" blade), cut to within 0.2 to 0.5 mm. Then drum samder in the drill press until you just see the feather edge start to dissapear. All 20 ends were done in about 15 to 20 minutes.
So no great mystery, just a trick of marking out.

I've been looking out for a design for some time now not quite finding the right one and you have just solved my problem, hope you don,t mind if I copy it, it looks like a piece of furniture not a packing case with books in like a lot shop bought ones do.
Thanks Arch.
