desk chair
Some pictures of a chair I just completed to go with a desk I posted about a year ago. The design is based on Sam Maloof's chairs.
It is made of blackwood, cut out of a big slab I bought from a deceased wood collector. Unfortunately there were a number of defects so I didn't get as much out of the slab as I had hoped.
The finish is Danish oil.

Nice job starr, anybody who builds a chair IMHO is a woodworking hero, well done. They are not the easiest of projects, thats probably why we see relatively few of them here. Myself, I am yet to attempt something like that.

Very nice piece, I like how you centered the flat sawn grain in the back rest, the seat also looks great and inviting.
How did you carve it ? did you use an angle grider and arbortech blade ? was it free handed or did you make some jig or drilled holes to get the right depth of cut ?
Really makes me feel like doing some wood carving/shaping, I love it.

Starr,
I must say how impressed I am. I love that type of chair. A simple style highlighted with a beutiful grain. A job very well done. Just a matter of interest, how many hours do you think you put into making the chair? Cheers, Joe.

The seat was carved with an Arbortech blade freehand. I just marked the depth on the front and let the chips fly. I kept taking more and more away until it felt right to sit on.
As for the number of hours, I didn't keep track, but I first made a test chair out of cheap pine to see what mistakes I would make before using the good wood. After that, it was fairly quick to do.
