Well I am certainly enjoying the feeling of making something, and I have not even started. At least I can jam my practise joint together without splitting the wood too much...

Still LIP (Learning in Progress) as well as WIP, but if anyone knows how I can smooth out the inside of the Mortise would be much appreciated? or does it matter much?

the fit looks good from here

    some tips:

it's hard to tell from your picture, but normally a tenon is 1/3 the thickness of the rail — but always sized to match the width of the chisel used for the mortice

the shoulder width (again 1/3 the thickness of the rail) is continued at the top and bottom of the tenon.

a stopped mortice & tenon (like what you're doing) would normally go between 1/2 and 2/3 of the way through the post

    Default Heavy Handed

    Cheers Ian,
My second attempt was probably just a little heavy handed, but the rest were easy after i had drilled the holes. Sure was easier than chiselling the whole way in! Also good to have a name to what im actually doing.

    your mortices look too wide
from here they appear to be about 1/2 the width of the rail, they should be no more than 1/3 the width.
The reason for keeping to 1/3 is to avoid excessive weakening the rail.

to avoid the wood fibres blowing out from the side of the mortice try clamping a block both sides of the rail

otherwise looks reasonably good so far

    Default 1/2 1/3

yep your right... hope its not too late. Those are my 4 leg mortises to put my bottom side rails in. My posts are 90 wide 32 deep, and i have 8mm-16mm-8mm for shoulder-tenon-shoulder. I have only gone 1/2 deep for the mortise...I was trying to dig a larger mortice width as i thought might make the joint stronger or less likely to move around.
