Dominoes Grandson project
My grandson visited for a few days over Christmas so I thought I would see if I could get him interested in some woodwork.
He likes playing dominoes particularly when he is beating me.
I had plans and had glued up some pieces of Qld Maple and African Mahogany with contrasting veneers, before he arrived.
To get the location of the dots, I scaled a photocopy of a set of dominoes.
My first attempt was to glue the paper to a Qld maple board and drill shallow depth into the board. The holes didn't drill clean.
I started making a Lexan template but that was too slow for m grandson.
We decided to make up symbols for each number and burn them onto the tiles. His mother told me to return him with all his arms and legs. She didn't mentions burns!
My eight year old grandson thought it was great. I had to get him to do a bit of practice first but he did are good job.
Only one small blister on his hand ( which he potographed and texted to his mother almost immediately).
Once I made the template, I could used a 6mm drill in the drill press to drill all the holes.
Then I cut each tile with a sled on the tablesaw.
Sand and polish.
The I used the same timbers to make a box for each of the three set.Scally

Terrific idea and outcome.
Not sure if my Grandsons could stay till enough for a whole set but definitely worth the trying.
Cheers

Thanks guys.
I think the smoke and fire kept my grandson on his toes and interested.
I worked on the template and watched him burning the symbols. The hot iron is very close to the fingers when you are holding a small domino tile. He concentrated pretty well and he only had a couple left to do when he brushed the hot iron against his hand. He didn't even get a blister but it was enough to make him concentrate.
The veneers are Fiddleback Blackwood, Tiger Stripe Myrtle and Birds Eye Maple.
The main timber on the boxes is African Mahogany that I bought from Mal. I is a medium density timber and easy to work. There was very little chip out on the box joints.
It polished well with Danish Oil.
The alternating grain gives a nice effect.Scally
