    Default Entertainment Unit W.i.p.

Most of the woodworking I do is in the small box category. I suppose this is just a slightly larger box.

The timber is Tasmanian Blackwood. The panels are Blackwood veneer on manufactured-board.

These two shots were taken at the pre glue-up stage. The top will hold a flat screen, the open shelf below will house the various remote controlled boxes, and below that will be doors that hide the shelf storage.

The joinery is done with dual 8mm dowels using a new jig which I will write about in more detail later. Next week I will commence glue-up and construct the two doors.

Nice box Don -- I mean entertainment unit.

Funny, I'm just starting a big box myself in tassie blackwood, too.

Look forward to seeing yours finished, and to more details of your dowel joinery. The ozziejig dowelling system is my bread-and-butter method, so I'd be interested in other approaches.

Hey! Is that carpet on the floor of your shed?!

Hmmm! I wondered about that myself. Driver, what does the Code have to say about carpeted shed floors? Looks a bit, well, not quite blokely...

    Don,
it's looking good, usually my favourite point in a job the dry fit. You get to see the bones of it and there's all the potential in the timber. A bit like listening to an orchestra tuning up. One thing's got me puzzled though, shot 1 the unit looks wider than it is high (or close to square), shot 2 it looks way taller than it is wide, what's going on there? (Or is it just my 'puta? )

Thanks for the comments and questions.

Lou, I'm not sure where the board originated. I special ordered it through Danahers, a Mitre 10 dealer in Heidleberg, Vic.

Zen, no, it's not the Ozziejig. I have one of those, and frankly, it never delivered for me. I am still impressed when I see that guy dem it at the shows, but I think he makes it look much more veratile than it really is. I'll give a hint, it's called the Joint Genie.

And yes, that is atificial turf on the concrete floor. It was there when we bought the house, and I did intend to remove it. However, changed my mind after dropping a few chisels and plane blades. It protects them from damage. Not very practical when it comes to cleaning up, though.

The dimensions are: 850mm high, 1200mm wide, and 520mm deep.

Yes, Mick, I never thought about it that way, but dry fit-up is like fine tuning, and it allowed me to correct some minor errors.

Harry, I hadn't thought of that - might just give it a try.

My clients initially wanted it stained with a redish (Jarrah) colour. Fortunately, I convinced them to go with the natural colour of Blackwood. So I'm ether going to use Minwax Wipe-On Poly, or Rustin's Danish Oil.

Yes, I intend to use solid Blackwood for the doors. I'm a little concerned by the width of the doors (approx. 500mm wide x 415mm high). I need to keep them light, because the style and rail thickness will be about 15mm. I intend to make the door panels as thin as 9mm. Any suggestions?
