Fence Post Wine Rack
This old fence post came from the Shoalwater Bay Military Training area near Rockhampton. The training area consists of a number of former cattle properties that were purchased by Defence in 1965 and so I guess the post is at least 40 years old. It was quite weathered and grey when I got it, but a wire wheel in the drill soon brought out the rich red grain underneath. It was made into a wine rack simply by drilling holes for the necks of the wine bottles. This was time consuming as I used a door lock hole saw in the drill and had to cut from both sides to the limited depth of the saw. It also took a while due to the extremely tough nature of the wood. I am not sure exactly what sort of timber it is - perhaps redgum? Finish is a satin Estapol sprayed on. The base is leftover mahogany from a coffee table.

Dion,
I have spent many long hard days and nights patrolling around that training area and it is good to see something from that godforsaken place becoming useful aswell as being eye catching. Well Done, very rustic and practical.
I am moving up north at the end of the year and am about to purchase a wine storage fridge as I am sure the heat will ruin my collection. Unfortunately this means I will have no use for a nice display wine rack like yours.
Cheers, Jack."There is no dark side of the moon really. Matter of fact it's all dark."

The post came from "The Glen" sector at the Bay. I took two posts back to Darwin, but after seeing what lovely timber it was I regretted not taking some more. There were plenty there and I had an empty 1/2 ton trailer....
