finally finished
This one turned out to be a true joint venture.
The box is made from a scroll saw pattern, can be totally made on the scroll saw. On this one tho Ken turned the middle. Bottom and top were added seperately and an extra ring/step was needed to adjust the hights of the movement.
Getting it all together after altering was a bit of a problem, so lots of people joint the discussion and with trial and error we finally got it done.
Can't wait to try another one...
Bottom is spalted pin oak... I choose it for the marble effect. Top I'm not so sure about anymore. The thought was I needed something light colour and not busy like the bottom.... so choose the bit of beech ( or was it birch??) ply a friend send us from the US.... liked it first... but now that the box is together I'm not so sure... seems almost too plain.

Is it a musical box?(hights of the movement.)

Yes it is a music box..... wind up key on the bottom, turntable on top.
By "hights" I meant the metal turntable's shaft was about 1/4" longer then needed. I couldn't cut it because the threads didn't go up all the way, so had to make the box body taller by adding an extra ring at the bottom.
And if anyone might be interested in making boxes like this.... yes... we do sell the movements

I like it.
Mmmm... I think you're right, it's missing something. Maybe the central column should be a darker colour than the figures, so the individual figures stand out more clearly?
Given your choice of wood, perhaps a judiciously applied bit of stain would make for a simple fix?

Ah..... but I don't do things easy...... lol
There's no central column..... these are two parts pushed together to make 3D.
And...... of course I already glued them on..... and..... I have never stained this type of ply before..... wouldn't know what colour... and ha.... it's already OILED..... lol
Think I don't really have a choice.... either leave it alone and give it as a present to someone who likes it the way it is, or redo the top from scratch.....
Have a piece of claret ash sitting here..... it's calling to me.... wanting to be transfered into angels..... maybe...
Thanks for everyone's input

Reality is no background music.
