Finished THE BENCH!!
Hi team - hope I can work this photo thingy. I put the wax on THE BENCH last night. Brilliant learning job, and only the third item I've made. The top is from a nice pack of 90x35 plate that arrived in the yard for the boys to make shutters ( boxing for concrete- too nice for that). The legs are from a bridge that we demolished in January. Maybe one day soon I'll put a twil-screw tail vice on - have to knock out a couple'a'three bits of furniture first though. for the $$$$ brownie credits.

That is a seriously nice looking bench, TassieKiwi!
How deep is the tool tray?
I'm still deciding whether or not I should add one to my bench when I get around to building it.I wanted to become a brickie but my old man said "No son, learn a trade."

Very nice bench. That top should be very stable with all that well quarter sawn timber.
Can you tell us what the timbers are?
And whats the L,W,H?
I had to re-read the bit about that timber being sold as boxing for concreting.
The cr@p they sell to us here for furniture timber, and they give you that for concreting! &*~%$#@$#%&@#!
NOT happy Jan!!!!
Very nice work.
Ben.

Thanks for the warm fuzzies guys - makes all the flak from SWMBO more easily forgotten!
Duckman - I agonised a bit over the tool tray, but liked the look of the classic bench with them. Figured that I could make a removable 'infill' if needed anyway. Also I have room for a separate assembly table so width was no worries. I made the tray so the #7 lies on it's side below the top - 75mm.
Ben from Vic - Tassies are very vague when it comes to type of timber. If its not a flash piece of Huon or myrtle etc, then its 'hardwood', or 'Tassie Oak'. Someone thought the legs might be swamp gum (?). The stretchers are white gum - these were destined for bridge decking, and the timber is looked on as rubbish hereabouts. Bloody heavy though. Bench is 2400x760Hxjustundermyoutstrechedthumbheldoutwhilestandingup(810).
It does break your heart to see the disdain that 'big business' and others have for this wonderful resource. In NZ you pay $5+/lm for second rate pine 90x45 - here they leave myrtle, sassy, etc etc on the ground, and woodchip the rest - 500,000 tonnes last year.
Be horrified and read the gory truth:

Great bench. This makes me a bit impatient regarding starting my new bench. Have a few other projects first. Most probably will have no funds left for a bench.
