Default Father and children shed time -- Part 1

Never rains but it pours. Last weekend two of the kids put in requests for woodworking. My daughter wanted to make one of her friends a framed mirror for a birthday present. We had an old bathroom mirror, and I had a length of pinus radiata left over from a previous job that already had a convenient rebate. Under the close supervision of my daughter, I cut a groove for the mirror:

I was very careful to use the feather board and pushsticks for what felt like a dangerous cut with the blade cutting so high. Note shopvac to get the dust thrown forward.

Then cut the rough mitres, with a little extra length for subsequent trimming on the shooting board.

This was a rush job, so there are no photos of the shooting or of the use of the Ozzie multijig for reinforcing the mitres with dowels (three per mitre), then clamping, then cleaning up with a plane.

We jump straight to the completion of the black paint job.

My daughter wanted a chinese look to the mirror so she got some images off the web, printed them out, and cut them out, and stuck them on to the frame. Then painted on some appropriate words (don't ask me).

Then a couple of coats of PU:

and we have the finished result:

Come up or right, a bit different but cool in a girly way... I prefer the plain look in photo #3 and I see the new bandsaw in the reflection!
Do you always get that close to the saw while cutting mitres?

Yeah: I was a bit shocked when I saw the closeness in the photo. Must be my old eyes. I may have just been lining it up. I don't think I get that close when the saw is actually running.

Rice Rice Baby? Your daughter doesn't look old enough to remember Vanira Rice!!

I've now been instructed by MY daughter to create a similar mirror. Any chance of borrowing your daughters artistic prowess?

    Great stuff Zen.

None the wiser. Unless you mean vanilla rice...still none the wiser.
