    Default Games table

Here's a games table I made about 4 years ago. Copied from a magazine article I'd seen.
Timbers are New Guinea Rosewood for the main frame, the inlays are Rock maple and Maccasar Ebony, the dark squares are Maccasar Ebony and Central American Mahogany. the light squares are Rock Maple and Kauri.

Excellent work. Are the squares end grain, or long grain inlays?

The squares are end grain, about 5mm thick. I have turned up most of the chess pieces....
it's an ongoing project!! It's been the hardest part of the whole project. I have turned all the light coloured pieces (rock maple) and about 3/4 of the way through turning the dark pieces (gabon ebony) I have only shattered 1 ebony piece in the lathe. (I went inside and had a beer!!) The table top opens up to reveal a backgammon board and there are 2 drawers, 1 at either end.
    Pics to follow.

Chess pieces, unfinished. I'll take some close up shots of the pieces to see the detail.

Here are some of the rock maple pieces. A 1/4" hole is bored into the base of each piece, about 1" deep and filled with molten lead to give the pieces some weight. Pieces still need to have some felt glued to the bases.

The inlay on your chess table looks very effective.

How did you cut out all the triangular pieces for the inlay?

You must have great patience to work with so many small pieces.

Not really small pieces! I started off with a square piece about a foot long and glue contrasting coloured pieces around the first piece then plane them at 45 degrees then continue to add the next layer then plane again... add a layer......etc, planing to 45 degrees each time. The hard part is getting the light and dark squares EXACTLY the same size!! or they won't meet up when assembling the board. The 'log' is then sliced up into approx. 5mm thick pieces then glued up on the mahogany base.
