Default Glass Door Key Cabinet WIP

I thought you all might like to follow this one, seeing as though I have had enough time to actually get into the workshop!.
I'm nearly done but have just got the first few pics off the camera, so will update tomorrow with the completed pics.

This is to be a key cabinet for a strata type building, (who knows why they need such a huge key cabinet? but the're the ones writing the cheques)

Pic 1 is the rough sawn board. Aus Red Cedar, (quite light in colour this board)
    Pic 2 Dimentioned stock
Pic 3 Thought that I would give the disc-sander a break so used the HNT Smoother.... yeah
Pic 4 yum, a nice tight fit! (don't ask how i take the pic with my third hand)
Pic 5 Test fitting the glass, com'on.... yes!

Tomorrow (today) time permitting I will update with the finished pics.

    Enjoy,

    Steven Thomas

    Default More pics

Ok here are the rest... almost.

Pic 1 Close up of the dovetails. I really like this spacing, it seems to work well
Pic 2 The Glass Door resting on top of the frame
Pic 3 Lap Joint close up
Pic 4 the unfinished beading that holds the glass in
Pic 5 Shows the fake swade and quad on the inside.

The door is really heavy, i think i'm going to have to go with piano hinge? Any other sujestions as to the best way the hang this door?

    cheers,
    Steven Thomas

    Nice cabinet Steve,

I also like the spacing that you've used on the D/Ts; great to see some hand-cut ones on a commercial utility piece.

Yes, but I'd like to see you put the HNT Smoother into action once more to get rid of that ugly gauge mark.

Great work there Steve, you certainly know how to use the tools you sell.

Now .. stupid question of the day .. the HNT smoother, are you using that to square the ends using a jig? (can tell i know a lot about planes huh )

Yep, The smoother is in use on the shooting board, (do a search for shooting boards... that's another kettle of fish). It holds the board square whilst you run the plane across the end grain (or long grain for that matter). The one in the pic is the version we make in the jig making class.

Gauge marks... every time I do DT's, I toss a coin on weather or not to remove the marks. Most of the time a toss a two dollar coin (two heads, you can never loose!)

    Thanks for the kind words.

    It's finsihed,
I had to change the hinges, I went with the piano hinge, much better.
Because I had already finished the frame, I went with the rebate plane to sink the hinge in so I didn't damage anything. A joy to use

    anyways that it.

    Cheers,

    Steve
