    Default I gotta show someone

I am building a surprise piece for my daughter and SIL. He inherited a lapdesk from his late father wheras she inherited many of her very-much-alive father's vices. The lapdesk looks to be too big to be a real lapdesk and there is no sign of it ever having legs nor of being part of a larger piece. I am making a hatstand/hallstand/coatrack/secretaire/cocktailcabinet/winerack that uses the lapdesk, chinese design elements, a replica antique chinese door latch, sapele that I bought from the company that sent me to China for a few years and the door latch even has 2 fish handles that represent them and their favourite hobby.
I fitted the cabinet doors today and there is no-one home to show .... so you lot get to see it first. I will post a proper thread when it is finished.

'Tis looking good so far, mate. It'll be interesting seeing the finished piece!

Check out the lap desk for hidden compartments - most genuine pieces have them - short drawers, double bottoms, hollow dividers etc.

Looks fantastic, Fletty. Looking forward to more pics, too.

Is there any way you can turn those hinges black? Might look more in keeping with the front decoration, and the overall theme of 'old'...

I wish there was more to the lapdesk but, if ever there was something 'special' about it, it is long gone. I have attached a few more pics,
pic1 shows the lapdesk in place
pic2 ... with the lid open
pic3 ... how it is held in and ...
pic4 was nearly heartbreak! I stained the doors and a sample piece with Traditional Cedar (and I hate staining perfectly good timber!) but it came out far too 'plum' in colour to match the lapdesk. I was about to take up some serious drinking but took the time to apply a coat of wipe-on poly to the sample ... and the 'yellowing' bought the colour back.
I will still be doing some serious drinking but for a different reason.
Hi Zen, I'm hoping I can find some 'antique bronze' hinges of the same size but, if all else fails I'll remove the lacquer and 'patinate'.
thanks for the comments everyone, Fletty

I've been working on weekends lately but finally got back onto the 'project' this weekend. The stain colour problem basically solved itself, Wattyl 'traditional cedar' stain which looks muddy after rubbing it out but then the MinMax wipe on poly changes, and lifts, the colour to match the lap desk. The attached pics are after only one coat of wipe-on with more coats and Traditional wax to go. I should have it finished next weekend ..... and then I can start fixing the inside of the lapdesk.

Looks brilliant. The colour matching is perfect as far as I can see.

Might take nerves of steel, but have you thought about distressing/aging the rest of the piece to match the laptop?

    Fantastic work fletty.

How are you intending to antique the hinges? I'd just pop them in some hot coals, works a trick!

    Cheers,

    Fletty,

Excellent work, it's coming up a real treat.
I'm puzzled though, how come you've suddenly got so much floor space in your shed???
    what did you throw out??
