Greene & Greene Bedside Table
My first bedside table and my first Greene & Greene piece. The design/plans are from a Fine Working Magazine article.
It took me forever to build bit by bit (started in October). A few bits around some of the plugs aren't all that clean so I might still take it back out to the shop once I figure out the best way to repair/hide it.
The making of photos can be found on Flickr.

What is the timber and finish? Green and green has fascinated me, but I haven't found it welcoming. This piece though is simple, clean and bright. I like it.

Thanks!
In my haste to post the photos, I forgot to provide woody details!
Timber: English Elm, Solomon's Ebony plugs (from the recent Melbourne show)
Finish: 4 coats of shellac. Shellac was thinned by 50% with methylated spirits. Applied with a brush and "rubbed out" lightly with 800 grit paper. Final rubbing was with tripoli powder.
Cheers,

Yep, from flakes. The ubeat brand. I mix up a normal batch, then dilute it again 50/50.

Well done. I'm still to finish my first piece of furniture. It looks great in light wood instead of the usual dark wood you see Greene and Greene in.

Great Job AB, well done. The English Elm has some nice grain. I am a bit of a Greene and Greene fan, it is so distinctive.
Thanks for sharing.
Cheers

So what was the Elm like to work with?
Beautiful grain and colour in it.
Just the one bedside table?
cheers

Thanks for the compliments folks.
Just one bedside table for now. I was going to make two but after seeing this one in the flesh, the draw is a little too small for us. I might look at doing a variation and a slightly larger pair at some point though. This one now sits in our guest room so it's perfect for that.
I'm finding Elm really nice to work with. It has an odd tabaco type smell when cutting. Quite a hard timber but has some really nice grain and features through it. It does tend to chip/flake a little so I'm finding I need to be very careful when wielding the chisels on the edges.
Cheers,

That is a good looking piece and shows off the workmanship.
I can see that there is a lot of work in.
The drawer does look small but that is easily fixed on the "pair for the main bedroom". The continuous grain running across the front looks very effective.Scally
