    Default Hall Table

Just finished this table to take to my daughter in Strathalbyn when we visit soon . It's 900x300x700 finished with Mirotone precat and wax . The legs and frame are blackwood and the top is blackwood veneer that I got from Peter Scott Young in East Ringwood . Whatever you want I'm sure he would have it .I wanted some highly figured veneer to contrast with my lighter cloured wood and he new exactly where to find .

Very tidy work Peter. I've always liked blackwood.

Did you lay the veneer yourself, or was it already supplied on a substrate ? If you did it yourself I'd love to read a couple of quick points as to how you went about it, as veneering is something I've always wanted to try but never gotten around to.

    Cheers,

    Justin.

G'day Justin and Terry . Yes I glued up the veneer myself onto 16mm MDF. The veneer was the width that I wanted (200mm)so I didn't have to join leaves . I used a 2inch foam paint roller to roll aquadhere onto both the veneer and the MDF , laying up both sides of the MDF ,and clamped the MDF between 16mm pieces of laminated particle board (whiteboard) using 4 inch G clamps . Anything much wider than 300mm I would use cauls on . Washed out the roller afterwards . One of those vaccuum thingies would be great

    Nice work mate.

Did you cut the legs on a bandsaw? How did you smooth the surface afterwards? Just sanding?

G'day Trav . Yes I cut the legs on the bandsaw and smoothed them with a block plane even on the inside curves by having the plane at about 70deg or so , so that the blade followed the curve - finished with sanding .The legs only had a slight curve .

Beautiful piece, Peter. Love the choice of timbers and the subtle details.

Did you veneer the opposite face as well (the 'B'-side) or don't you have to do that with MDF?
Those are my principles, and if you don't like them . . . well, I have others.
