    Default Another hall table

I made this hall table for our club raffle to be held in conjunction with our woodwork exhibition at the end of October.
Blackwood with celery pine inserts, finished with U Beaut hard schellac and tradional wax.
In the back ground is my own roll top desk under construction.
Hope you like them Nine Fingers

Great stuff Nine fingers - except for that terrible grain in the top. Now you wouldn't see that down at Bunnings.
Seriously, really nice stuff and the future owner will have to be pleased.

(Huge intake of breath!) Wow, you've really done a nice job with that timber! You've chosen the best finish for it too - that's come up a treat. Top job.

I always wanted a roll top desk, after altering the study I made room for one. The desk under construction is made from Surian cedar
(asian) ,about 1/3 the price of Australian red cedar, which I really would have liked to use.
The ends, back are tenoned with solid panels about 9mm thick.A small bull nosed mould bead finished the panel off.
Still experimenting on scrap cedar, with various stains ,fillers , etc to get the finish I like. I did not have any plans to follow,I set it out full size on a 3mm sheet of fineline.
will post pics when finished. Nine fingers

Love the desk, Im part way through a RT desk myself.

Work got in the way of finishing it off, I HATE  having half finished projects hanging around.

Hopefully I will get to finish it one day.
How did you do the tambour, and tambour groove??

NF, love your work. Particularly impressed with the roll-top desk. How about more details?

Wow, love the desk. I'd love to have the skills to make a roll top desk one day. When I get good enough I think I'll have a go at making a tambour for a roll top bread box.
    Boring signature time again!

    Great Table..

I'm not much of RT desk type of guy. I'm a stacker, and if you stack stuff on a RT, it just rolls off.. ..

    But your is nice looking

    Nine Fingers,
Both of your projects are fantastic. I especially like the desk. One of my first major projects I would like to do is a roll top desk. One Day...........
Have a nice day - Cheers

The slats for the tambour are 30x10 with 10mm bull nose on both edges, glued with contact adhesive to light weight pre shrunk canvas ,as used by artists. The groove I cut with a 1/2in router bit ,following a template.
PM me if more information is required nine fingers

The table is a Fantastic piece, could you explain to us how you joined the table top ?
Do you have a not so precise fit on the bowed sides and you cover with the inlay ? If not how do you manage a close fit on non straight pieces ?
Did you biscuit joined it then ?

    Really beautiful, congrats.

    Talking another hall table

JackG, Sorry I'm a bit late to answer your query about the top on the hall table.Been interstate for a couple of weeks.
The centre section I scavanged from a cabinet maker, who I visit frequently,to raid his offcuts etc. It is a off cut of 19 mm Blackwood veneered particle board, trimmed to the shape I required, surrounded by 19x 5mm celery pine .
The outer trim was 42x30 ,bandsawn to shape ,and hand fitted ,glued in place with biscuits.
    hope this is sufficient.
