Hand plane number 2
Here is the second hand plane. This one I made from rock maple and what I think is Jarrah from Australia. I got the wood from a table and chair set that someone was throwing away. When I took off the paint I was shocked to find such a nice red wood underneath. A stamp on the furniture said it was made by a company called Jensen Jarrah. Don't know if anyone has heard of the company, but here in the states it is nice to find such beautiful wood.
There is no blade in this plane - it's in the mail. So I installed a large wedge to true up the bottom.

That's a great-looking plane. Well done!
Jensen Jarrah is based in Busselton, here in Western Australia. I know the company - and its owner, Max Jensen - quite well. Max is a great bloke and his company is a success story. They make high-end outdoor furniture from jarrah and export most of their output to the US.
If you had to strip paint off that table and chair set then someone has obviously decided at some point in the past to paint over the wood because it certainly wouldn't have been supplied that way. You're right, jarrah is a beautiful wood, It's tough to work but the end result is always worthwhile.

G'day Jim,
The second one is even better than the first. I like the contrasting timbers, looks great. I bought a Jensen outdoor table & 6 chairs about 20 odd years ago, & it cost over $1000 back then. Thing is, it was very comfortable. You didn't even need cushions. But to paint a jensen?
Glad you made good use of the timber mate.
SteveThe fact remains, that 97% of all statistics are made up, yet 87% of the population think they are real.

Steve,
Yea, I know. Some people are crazy. What makes it even more bizzare is that they painted such a beautiful wood that is not even local - it's difficult to come by in the states. The wood itself is a lovely red and of all things, they painted it brown!! What's really strange is that they were just throwing it away. People are sometimes nuts!!! But it was my good fortune. We kept the set for outside and the pieces that were ruined I used as timber.
Take care
Jim
