Hot Dish Stand

My daughter-in-law is into tile mosaics and wanted to make a pot stand (for putting hot serving dishes on the table). I made the following as a prototype out of black cherry with an ash infill. The frame is constructed using bridle joints (?) with the ash infill being longer on two sides and correspondingly shorter on the other two. The inner plate is 6mm ply with a cork tile applied to the underside as a finish and for additional heat protection. She then applied the mosaic and grout. The only improvement I can think of is to make the frame slightly thinner so the tiles stand more proud of the surface so the hot dishes don't contact the frame. Definitely have the tiled surface proud of the frame. I made a pile of pot stands/trivits using ordinary square tiles in hardwood frames with a burnished oil finish, these can take red hot dishes straight out of the oven because nothing actually touches the timber.

So practical when its pointed out. Another good tip filed away for future use.

Thanks Chief. In my own defence, I had thought of it but based the design on a floor tile thickness which would have stood 1.5 - 2mm higher than the surround. When my d-i-l brought the finished piece to show me she had used regular wall tiles which were thinner. Cheers, Pete

Only out of interest by how did she get the tiles to stick to the cork? just glue or proper tiling glue and when she grouted them did it come of the timber easily?

Sorry for any confusion. The cork tile is on the underside simply to cover the bare ply and give added heat protection. The ceramic tile pieces were mounted onto the unfinished top ply surface using regular tile cement and grout. I recommended she mask-off the frame while she applied the mosaic to avoid having to wipe off any cement or grout from the finished wood surface as the grout in particular can be quite 'gritty' and abrasive.
