Default What I've been working on

    Hi all
Been a quiet guy without any projects to tell you all about since we got E.Maculata's timber over here. The reason is because I have been making benches and the like to get my shed ready to make some hardwood picture frames in. They are pretty rough compared to some of the stuff that we see the Major do for his shed but I am a beginner and a workbench is a workbench.

I have three benches the big one is an old one I made a short while ago out of Radiata that was left over. The others are an extension to my mitre saw with a stop that has a toggle clamp to hold it on. The other is a place to put stuff and have a bench grinder on it too.

Glad to be making steps in the right direction

Hmmm thats what I need more bench space and a perminate spot for the mitresaw.
Benches look quite fine to me Stevo, looks like the E.Mac wood is coming in handy... havent touched mine yet other than stacking it outside in a rack!(the 3rd time I've had too move it!)

Square section to the handle for your front vice ?????

    Now you NEED a lathe!!

And that means another bench to sit it on!

Looks good to me. Plenty of area on that bench and looks like it has been getting a workout. Look forward to seeing what is produced on the bench.

nice. You've got a vise like mine. I've made a racking jig that I found handy. Gives you more binding pressure when just gripping on one side.

and I reakon don't bother cleaning up all those shavings. Just brush them on the floor. Makes the place look lived in. Feels far better than everything being 'clean' all the time. Only problem I found with it is when your working with small bolts and screws. It takes forever to find them when they fall on the ground.

And also the rats in my shed use the shavings to make nests, which basically means I'm infested. Their ravenous buggers. They love buffing compounds. I got some of that expensive green stuff ($20 a block) from carpatec which I just love for sharpening. But the rats love it too. Nearly caught one the other day. Set the trap with a little bit of the compound. The trap took him accross the head. Watched it happen. Huge bugger. He just casually pulled himself away from the thing and just walked away a little stoned. Must be something in the compound that makes them so tough I guess.

Anyway, keep going. Looks like your enjoying yourself. Good stuff.

*LOL* Yeah I know but what about a jointer thicknesser first?

MIK sold me the vise but had no handles so I ripped one and glued the ends on. Planed it all off to make it nice and smooth took the edges off. Might be the only square handle going round but it is a handle

Maybe a cry for help here will produce some round handle(s) for you.

Just look what happened when Grunt said "Help, my knob is worn out"

Or you could buy a lathe

    Hey Studley,

Nice work! I love the first bench, it looks way too good for the shed, but will go really well in my Hallway!!!!

Love the very useful drawer layouts too. Inspirational!

Nah Wendy it is all the rough bits of timber that were there abouts. The Drawers are miles out of square too. It is solid but just what you need in the shed. I made some brackets that go over the bottom cross piece to hold it in position with the stand the mitre saw is on and then screwed the top down so the saw and the rail were in a straight line. Something is out of whack as the top goes at an angle.

Thanks for the greenie. It is a pretty good bench for what it is meant for.

    G'day Studley 2436,

Ahh, benches gotta love 'em. Sure beats working on the ground or with sawhorses and having them fall over all the time.

In the 2nd pic there, 3rd compartment from right at front, what is it in there? I've got one too but for the life of me at the moment can't work out what it is.

    Looking real beaut!

My drawers are out of square too, guess that's what happens when you grab palettes from off the sides of the road or from factories and the timber is a bit warped. (my case anyway)

Thats a router guide. Screws into the sole of your router and then you can guide the router through a dovetail jig for instance. I had all these bits lying around and then Major posted his bench and I thought I would do the same sort of compartments in a drawer.

    G'day Studley,

Well that'd be for the router that I don't have yet.

My brother-in-law grabed my Dad's Hitachi before I could get my hand on it. One of those items to my yet to get list.

Outa square? Story of my woodwork Can't see it from the photos, but that's ok. I'm thinking it's nearly time I built a hall table based on yours, after I finish a lot of other projects first though.

    cheers
