Jarrah Dining table nearing completion
Well as Im heading back to the mine on Monday for a 3 week stint (playing major catchup after bein crook for 5 weeks!) I decided that I MUST finish the dining table for Tiffany and Ben before I go as they move into their new place while Im gone
3'11" Dia solid Jarrah Dining table now stands on its own... with some small help from 2 clamps holding the legs to cleats
And damn it feels good when it goes right!! I mean I fit under the thing with room to spare!!
You can see the template I used to cut the top to the circle in the last pic... as can be seen this has now been drilled in prep for the 4x 1/4in x 1in x 12ft strips to be laminated around it... that will end up being fitted around the outside of the table top and a 2/8 strip will be added to the inside shaped to slope inward... much sanding and finishing to be done along with the trestle being final fitted to the cleats... I also have to spend some time at the lathe tomorrow making many 1/4in and a few 1/2in trenails to join it all together... the top to cleats are done thank goodness!! What a bloody nightmare that was getting the bloody things to pull in the just the right direction I somehow think I wont be doing a table this way EVER again! In fact I KNOW I wont!
I was hoping to get to put some marquetry on the top but time is against me now... I hopefully will be able to do something small somewhere!! want to get into a sorta "trademark" "makers mark" thing with that
Okay so next update should show the completed table totally finished... Saturday Im plannin for the big unveiling to the kids and a fine tune of the final polish on Sunday
Its been some 3 months in the making but actually about a week all up to get her to this point and I dont mind sayin Im not just actin pretty chuffed sitting there!!
Onto the next kids housewarmin pressie!! a pair of hall tables for Yaz and Dan... then I just gotta start makin a couple of cradles!!
THERE IS A BOAT SOMEWHERE IN THE FUTURE!!
But would yer lookit all that sawdust!! WHAAHOOOOOOO!!Believe me there IS life beyond marriage!!! Relax breathe and smile learn to laugh again from the heart so it reaches the eyes!!

Lookin great Shane I realy like the look of the base. The nice curves give it a classy look and match in well with the round top. Your Daughter will be stoked

I had to literally hold myself back when I did those Lig... near kept going up the legs!!! curvy legs mmmmm yum but then sanity came to the rescue and I figured maybe doin that would make her unstable and over done so I stopped at the feet
Im getting impatient to see her finished... Im not one to actually like Jarrah on its own much really prefer it as a highlighter timber or as a background timber as its a bit too much on its own in my book... but these boards have some serious color issues! ranging from almost white through pinks to dark reds in the same boards which is why Ive done this one without any other timber being used... will be interesting to see her totally finished to see what colors remain
Very old very weathered boards were used... took a few more than I thought too by gar! bloody bendy cuppy stuff it were! rough as guts outside but underneath? ooh yeah! pure woodbutchers heaven
Cheers!Believe me there IS life beyond marriage!!! Relax breathe and smile learn to laugh again from the heart so it reaches the eyes!!

No worries will do... actually its as easy as having shyteloads of clamps... make the strips slowly bend the glued up strips around the form clamping as you go clamp both directions underneath as well to keep it straight and clamp the strips themselves to stop them coming apart... clamp it all up to the form gradually put on clamps till just before force wait 10mins 1/4hr and clamp a few more wait clamp till theyre all the way round then clamp the remainder to the already clamped ones till the whole length is clamped up... now wait till the glue works its majik... when done remove clamps... carry to table top put it around it will fit easy since the timber will spring back a bit now using fishing line clamp it down to the table gluing as you go... when tight up against table use jap saw to cut scarf join in right spot... glue one end down now drill holes for trenails and bung one in one end and slowly work your way around the table till you reach the join again cut the excess strip off... this should be about 1/4in or less as youve already cut close to size beforehand... drill final holes and bung in trenail... whallah done! easy as eh?
Other way Id thought of was to make the strips 1/2in instead and steam bend them... but to be honest I cant stand burnin myself which I have a bad habit of doin whenever I steam bend timber just me I guess but theres something about the scent of steam and wood I just gotta have a look a feel you know? sigh
Okay will do with the picsBelieve me there IS life beyond marriage!!! Relax breathe and smile learn to laugh again from the heart so it reaches the eyes!!

Great work, Wild Dingo - and I must say - I really thought it couldn't have been really you posting, until I could see in your responses to Lig some of the 'ol Dingo!! Phew!
Very fine furniture, I must say - and you deserve to be well pleased with it. I'll check back to see it all finished.
Cheers,
Jill

aawww shucks Jill tis weally twuely me you cheeky girl it tis I
Wongo... mate... maaate! There is nothing I would rather do than just that talk about the ideal stay home and work in the shed all day? YES BLOODY PLEASE!... but sadly one does tend to need that damnable $$$ stuff to start anything like that and to keep her blody highness happy so thats where the mine kicks in
Workgoose... I am presently cause of time constraints thinking of a nice thick coat of that 2 pack poly stuff for the top and some marine varnish for the rest I just happen to have both laying around the shed in need of using before their expiry dates kick in... would dearly love to have the time to do something seriously special with it but... Tiff and Ben are moving while Im away so needs be done now... sigh time mate time
Cheers for the comments peopleBelieve me there IS life beyond marriage!!! Relax breathe and smile learn to laugh again from the heart so it reaches the eyes!!
