    Default jewellery box X3

    Hi,

This is my first post with images, so please bear with me...
These boxes I made for my daughters (have got to make everything in threes ). They are my own desigh, all solid timber - Blackwood, NG Rosewood and Tassie Myrtle, Huon Pine for the trays and Alpine Ash for the runners - are approx 300x200x100, and finished in a Danish Oil / PolyU mixture.
Dovetails by Gifkins Jig, and lining is a suede look material. The plan was to use suede but I couldn't source any around here. ANY comments / criticisms gratefully received.

    Chris

Hey Banksiaman, what a great job!
I think they look great ... love dovetail corners and I particularly like your simple lid lifter groove and the groove in the tray. Looking at the hinges you used, am I right that the carcase is out of 12mm stuff?

    Cheers,

    Zoot Esq.

Thanks Zoot (and Wongo). The timber thickness varied, depending on how much work went into planing and scraping - some got down to 10mm - The figured myrtle top took a lot of work, and I was worried about the stability (thickness) but is stable so far - touch metal.

Very nice work, Banksiaman - you should have earned some 'dad's browny points' over those!

Very nice work indeed. The girls will be so proud of their Dad.
Are the hinges and "stay open devices" one unit or just installed very close to each other?

    Thanks all.

Jim, they are one unit. You can get a range of them, from cheaper versions (Bunnings) to top quality ones (see various suppliers at a wood show)
These were from Bunnings, as they were small enough to fit my timber thickness. The best quality ones tend to be larger sizes (and dearer of course).

Like a little black dress.....elegant simplicity. You have taken a simple design and, with the quality of your work and the finish, have turned out three beautiful pieces. Well done seems hardly enough.

    They look fantastic.

I like the chamfer on the lid.

Very classy design. I like the colour of the lining material: something a bit different, but still subtle and pleasant on the eye.

BTW: did you know there is a sub-forum specifically for boxmaking?
Those are my principles, and if you don't like them . . . well, I have others.
