Just caught a look and thought (like everyone else)....WOW !!!!

That looks just unbelievable, your workmanship looks second to none.

And as for 'hope she likes it', i have no doubt she will be just blown away. Something she will treasure for a lifetime.

And no.2 looks just as good. Very well done.

    Steven.

p.s. From the reflection in the mirror of your first pic. You look like you do have plenty of timber 'just in case'. Very envious !!!

    Brilliant Redgy.
I can only aspire! Love your work. Do you recall the Woodsmith edition with the WIP ?

Thanks Swanz & Christos, issue 45 so it's a few years back, I think they're up to 100 or so now.

Beautiful work Redgy, I love the English oak burl inlay on the lid, it gives it real touch of class. Your Daughter will treasure this piece for
life but I must say it might take her a lifetime of jewel collecting to fill it, it's a big box.

Lovely work Redgy.... and a bl**dy good idea to make a second one for Mrs Redgy! I think they will BOTH be treasured. I only wish it had been posted in the box makers section so that I would have maybe seen it a bit earlier (I'm a bit busy at the moment and unfortunately only get time to skim!)
As the others have said, the Sydney blue gum has come up an absolute treat.
Just 1 question if I may (as I'm about to undertake the same task), how did you set up to do the half laps for the dividers?

Thanks fletty, I will put the second one in boxmakers....soon

To answer your question, I thicknessed the strips down to just over saw kerf allowing for sanding. Then once all the measurements were worked out (even though it was in the book mine were slightly different) setup an auxiliary fence on the miter gauge anf then set the blade height to 1/2 the strip height. Set the strip on edge and up against gauge stop and cut the kerf. Final sanding to get the smoothness for oiling and get the final fit of joint.

I didn't take any pics at the time but just went and did a quicky (with rip blade!) and took some photo's to show what I mean. Did my head in a bit as not all the strips are the same height so some had 10mm cut, some 22mm, some on the top edge, some on the bottom etc....but all in all not too bad once I got going with them.

    Cheers
    Redgy
