Thread: Jewelry Chest....my most challenging project ever

And just for laughs (or I'm a glutton for punishment) I thought I would make another one for my wife

Here's a couple of teaser pics...

Timber is NG Rosewood (whole project from 1 piece) , Jarah dovetail keys, English Oak burl veneer top, finish same as 1st one and interior will be dark marone velvet...

It will be finished in a couple of weeks and I'll post some pics done better and with SLR.

Absolutely awesome work

I love the combination of timbers in the first box, they work well together. Also like the lid design with the bead around the veneered panel; I always get stuck trying to make the transition between a veneered panel and the frame of the lid look good, but that's one of the best solutions I've seen.

Can I ask how the lid was made? Is the bead integral to the frame timber of the lid, or is it a separate strip of wood?

The entire box looks very crisp indeed - I can really see the hours that went into this !

Mr Brush, the lid is made up of a framed ply panel then the sides rebated into that then moulding glued under that before rounding over the top edges to hide the joint line. The pic below is during construction and might show what I mean. Then the veneer was applied to another piece of ply and sized about 3mm smaller than the recess in the top and glued on with a gap between it and the edge of the top frame.

Then made some small moulding and rebated the bottom edge so it glued down in the gap and covered the edge of the veneered panel....this was pretty fiddly and I've done it slightly different on the second one.

Then inside I stretched the velvet over some foam glued to another piece of ply with the foam having a recess cut out slightly bigger than the mirror. Cut a few holes in the velvet to expose the ply and araldited the mirror on then glued the whole thing inside the lid. So the lid is quite weighty and was more work than the box exterior.

Redgy - many thanks for the additional information and photo. If I understand correctly, the cross section through the lid panel and frame would look something like the sketch I have attached?

The black shaded portion is the strip of moulding.

Also, can I ask where you got your veneer from for the lid panels? I'm a very small volume user, and have trouble finding good sources for those "special" bits of veneer for box lids, etc.

I've never clapped eyes on English Oak Burl veneer before !!

You have inspired me to finally do something with a spectacularly bright orange board of NG Rosewood I was given some time ago. Doesn't seem to have faded in 2 years, and there is JUST enough to do a box if resawn carefully.
