    Default keyring pen

    hi all

thanks to naf, i was able to turn a keyring pen.
i'm still looking for an aus supplier so if any one knows of one please tell.

the timber is red mallee burl and it is a very hard timber to turn IMO.
the finish is 3 coats of hut pen polish.

the other pen is a pen which i experimented with design. it is tiger myrtle and i think i used hut to finish ( it was either that or shellawax). i want to take off the clip because it is digging into the timber, how do i do this?

as usual, any comments etc are welcome

I like the keychain pen - one reason for botering with making something is that there isn't a good commercial alternative and this is a case in point.

I don't know how to get the clip off the tiger myrtle pen. I suppose it shows that the experiment in design with the large bulge at the top of the pen wasn't suitablefor the pen kit you were using - not only does the clip dig into the wood, but by being at an entirely odd angle, it looks very peculiar. Could you grind it off (eg with a dremel or some other flexishaft tool)?

    Good work Stirlo

Removing the clip is easy, it's the other end that's needs specialised gear.

Just grab a Phillip's screw-driver that fits inside the tube and use it like a mandrel. No, not a turning mandrel... a "punch" mandrel. ie. Slip the tube over the end, turn the screwdriver upside down and, holding the pen barrel, rap the screwdriver handle on a bench a few times to punch the end out.

It's an idea to hold the clip/button with your "free" hand, just so it doesn't get lost when it comes loose. They're not as hard to find in the shavings as dropped centre bands, but..

I knew it would... I've done it often enough.

The pen looks a lot better without the clip; actually, it's the sort of shape I was thinking about when I was talking about mixing keyring bits with pen kits. You know the domed end-cap from a keyring? Imagine how that'd look at the end of the pen instead of the normal flat cap.

Not that I'd pull that pen apart again, you can only pop 'em apart a few times before they loosen up and you have to start to gluing the bits back in. And it does look good as is.

But it's something to keep in mind for the next one.

Good work Stirlo, but I have found that I can completely disassemble most pens with just a screwdriver and a bit of welding rod. Same process. You just need rams of different thicknesses.
