    Default Knife Block

My daughter is setting up a new apartment and asked for a knife block for Christmas.

She sent me the attached pic of a Wustof knife block.

It looks pretty neat and should be straightforward.

I used my knives to get the approximate dimensions.

I cut the slots on the tablesaw so even the thickest chef knife would fit.

The challenge would be to find the magnetic sheet to hold the knive in their slots.

My thought was that a signwriter might have some as they make magnetic business cards. Maybe he would be willing some to sell me.

The third one had the right stuff. He was interested in what I wanted to do and even got a knife from his kitchen to test if the magnet was strong enough.

We chatted for a while......I think he might be a good contact.

So I routed a groove on the other side of each board. Then cut magnetic strip to match.
At the signwriter's suggestion I fixed the magnetic strips to the timber with double-sided tape.

I clamped a couple of boards together a tested it with a couple of knives. It worked.

Next I glued the prepared Tasmanian Blackwood boards together.

A few coats of Danish Oil and it wil be ready for Christmas.

My GF has one, a ponderous cube of thing which sits on the bench. That, I don't like.
Yours might be attached to the underside of a cupboard, up & out of the way?

I like this idea. I am wondering if I can make one.

Ditto - I've even been experimenting with the small round rare earth magnets to see how close they have to be to the knife to work.....

I also want to add a vertical slot in the LHS (i.e. just beyond the knife blades) sized to support the cutting board held on edge.

I like this a LOT. Rather that the mag sheet and since the segments are already apart, a few rare earth magnets epoxied into the side would work wonders.

Might add that to the to-do.....the loooooong to-do

    Default Knife Block home

Here are a couple of pics of the knife block in place.

My daughter is pleased with the flat profile. It sits neatly against the wall.

It is pretty straight forward to make. You guys would have no trouble.

I have rare earth magnets and thought about using them.
You would need to put a few in each of the slots so you cater for any size knife.

The bigger the knife the better the magnetic strip holds. The small paring knife I had didn't hold as well as the carving knife. The blade flared towards the handle and that tended to push the top of the blade away from the magnet.

I like the design. It looks neat and will fit nearly any size knife. I think I'll make more of them one day.
    Cheers

Good. The design fits nicely in that kitchen.
Plus, the footprint is very small.
I've got some birch with good heartwood color.

Yup, added to my list as well. Thx for posting Scally!
