    Default KnockBox

Occasionally (under pressure from SWMBO) I do make something else other than tools and jigs I recently finished making this knockbox for a friend who recently got a nice new coffee machine for his birthday.

It's basically a sheoak box open at both ends in which sits a plastic liner. The tassy oak handle which double acts as the knocker is covered with a piece of 1" clear PVC tubing. The handle folds back to allow the liner to be readily removed and the coffee ground pucks emptied.

Because this sort of item usually sits on a kitchen bench and is liable to get wet and dirty and need regular cleaning, finish is 3 coats of marine grade varnish rubbed back to a flat smooth finish with 400/800 grit paper and then finished with sponsors trad wax.

On reflection I guess I should have put a bit more effort into finishing the interior.

BTW, the sheoak was resawn from this slab.

Oh! So that's what a knock box is

Looks great Bob - must be nice to be able to give the coffee tool thing a decent knock on the box and not have the box run away over the counter.

    cheers

    Cheers guys.
BTW You're welcome for coffee at my place anytime.

Knock boxes as used in cafes are usually made from 100mm poly or PVC pipe, or from stainless steel but I think wooden ones are much more attractive.

Hope you don't mind Bob, but consider your idea nicked! Wife not too impressed with the pvc pipe on the bench.

    Wendy, I'm with you

Box looks great. I can see my son wanting one of those. He's into all these fancy coffee styles.

Looks great, but I think the plastic on that handle will wear out pretty quickly. Maybe a stainless steel rod?
Those are my principles, and if you don't like them . . . well, I have others.

What hits the plastic handle is the edge of a stainless steel (ss) filter basket that holds the used coffee puck. The filter basket edge needs to be kept knick and bump free to continue to make a good seal with the coffee machine so bashing the filter basket on any metal is not be a good idea. Cafe 's usually use polypropylene or even rubber and under their volume of coffee production they have to replace the the knock box handle every couple of years. I have a plastic covered handle on my home knock box and after 3 years of significant use is barely has a few scratches on it. I did think of using a SS pipe but covering it with plastic.
