    Default My Krenov inspired Cabinet

This is my go at a Krenov styled piece. I had a photographer freind take the pic cause im usles at that. Its a combination of solid and veneered Blackwood. The case work is a veneered convex torsion box, and the door panel is concave, pinned only in the middle of a flat frame, so you can see into the cabinet through the sides. The base is solid, and side rails are laminated convex curves the same radius as side of cabinet, and the inside corner of each leg is chamfered lightly at the top leading to a more heavy chamfer at the bottom, turning a four sided leg at the top into five sided at the base... very effective. The little handle is scrap carved with a pocket knife. My only regret is that the hinges look out of place, wish i had of used knife hinges, maybe next time

    G'Day Lignum!

Excellent work! Looks as if it might have beena bit tricky to get the joinery to line up properly, but you have, so well done!

Agree with your point on the hinges.

    Greenie whizzing off now!

    Cheers!

Unfortunatly the pics were taken on 35mm camera and i only have them on slide, and only two of this cabinet were transfered to disk... But the panel opening is only about 10mm out of the frame at the edge. When you read Krenov you develop a whole different mindset on how you want to approach your work and how you want it to look, and nowdays im not into furniture with different species, but prefer to use the hues and textures of a single species in a symetrical way like in this piece, and like Krenov, all the details are very subtle and the more you look the more you find. i hate loud over bearing work.

    Hi Lignum,
That is a delightful looking cabinet, and you should be happy with your effort!
Krenov is a highly motivational guy to read, and I can't deny his books really did alter the way I look at wood and design.
    Good on you.

That's an absolutely fantastic piece Lignum. I love the details like the chamfers on the legs, and the handle. Have to agree with your design philosophy about using a single species. Wonderful stuff.

    A truly stunning piece Lignum!!!!!!!!!!

I agree, knife hinges would be the icing on the cake but standard hinges used don't detract very much.
    What finish did you use?
    Cheers

Awesome. Something to aspire to. More photos would be greatly appreciated if you can arrange it somehow.

I love the detail at the top of the leg. How was that done ?
Tomorrow I will be in the workshop trying out the five sided leg. Are all 5 sides roughly the same dimension at the bottom ?

Also, the little handle. I presume the black bits are metal, where did you get them from, I would like to use something like that.

    thanks for showing
