Latest Work
The better half has finished the first painting she has done in years - nice work
And I've managed to finish a wedding present - box from fiddleback blackwood. Wish I knew what the veneer on the top was. Really nice stuff - luckily I have some more.
Finish is Danish oil & wax.The Australian Woodworkers Database - over 3,500 Aussie Woods listed: http://www.aussiewoods.info/

One gold star and a smilie stamp for the both of you. Very nice work.
The veneer on top would have to be Huon pine.
Did it smell like those lolly bananas?

I've seen both the painting and the box in the flesh, and they are both magnificent. Great work D & D.

Why not combine both, for a truly unique gift.

Yo Darryl!!
Excellent from both of you...... this is the part where you & aforementioned Mrs. feel VERY proud
By the look of the veneer it's birds-eye Huon Pine, I've only seen 2 examples of it & it was in board form. The gent (who's name escapes me now) who owns & runs the Huon Pine salvage in Strahan had the boards. I dare say it would be worth a small fortune

Daryl, both look great. Saw both in person as Termite did and agree that they look even better when seen close up.

Daryll,
Great box.
How did you make the lid? I realise its veneer on mdf, but how is this joined to the frame?

Great work. Boxes are something that I have not attempted. I recently purchased some champhor with the intention of turning it into a box after seeing one made from the same timber. Looked good. Just hope my effort looks as good as yours.

Thanks guys
The wedding was on the weekend, and the box was definitely appreciated.
The top is pretty simple. The outer frame is solid wood with a rebate to fit the veneered top, just mitred at the corners and then glued. Plenty stable enough.
I ran the bits for another 6 boxes at the same time for Xmas presents - sides in huon pine, silky oak and American black walnut. Tops in more of the birdseye huon pine, fiddleback myrtle, fiddleback Qld walnut, and a couple different burls.
