    Default Low Entertainment Unit

A while ago I was posting in the finishing section on how to finish a low lying entertainment unit.

I was having a lot of difficulty working with MDF for the first time. I wanted the unit a low gloss or matt black. I was having a lot of difficulty with the primer and paint I had purchased. Anyways, cos I had already spent the money and had alerady gone so far, I decided to persevere, bogging up dodgy bits with car filler and sanding and painting and sanding and painting.

The end result is below. Its a very simple design, but thats all I needed. A low lyig unit to sit below the projector screen to hold the Receiver, dvd, set top box and VCR. The sub woofer sits off in the corner. There are two side cabinets for storing assorted bits.

Its already in the room, which as you can see is very dark so the pic quality is not great, but you get the general idea.

Basicall it is just 25mm mdf top and bottom, with 25 mdf on the 2 outer sides with 16mm mdf in the middle. I dowelled and glued all the parts together, the middle shelves are setting on shelf pegs.

Probably not the strongest way of joining, but Im still a novice and again learned a lot from this.

Anyways, hope this gives some ideas for anyone else who needs a home theatre unit.

    cheers

That's a seriously magnificent set up, Redback. Must be great to recline in that couch and watch a good DVD. The matt black unit is ideal. I like to turn out the lights and have a minimum of distractions, especially for a good horror movie.

Did you think of some kind of front door for the electronic boxes? I get annoyed at all the indicator lights, especially ones that blink or move around with the sound volume. I've got a sliding door on my modest unit that shuts all of that out nicely.
Those are my principles, and if you don't like them . . . well, I have others.

This is by far the favourite room in the house. With the doors shut and all the curtains closed, we get a pitch black room. The screen is two metres wide.

The wife and and lie back on our couch and just soak it in.

The sounds system is so powerful that once I was watching a war movie fiarly loud and the wife could feel the house vibrating out in a back room )
(not healthy I know, but awesome! )

Lately, all I see is discussion on LCd vs Plasma etc tv's for home theatre. Sorry, there is nothing that comes close to a projector!...

I thought about covering the units with an etched glass. I may add that at a later date, shouldnt be too hard. Frankly by the end of this one I was a bit sick of this project and wanted to finish it. I don't like working with MDF and wanted it over and done with asap!

Mate - that looks great. I can't see the finish in detail, but it looks better than shop bought - plus it is custom made to fit all your components. I'm thinking of making an entertainment unit but after your troubles with MDF, I might go with tassie oak or similar.

    Nice work RB

    Thumbs up Very Nice

Great job Redda's, fits the bill perfectly.

As for the doors, why not try the fabric used to cover speaker fronts. Had a mate in Sydney who used it for a similar function. It blocks out most of the flickering lights, but still allows the remotes to do thier thing.

As for the room, I think the location for the next gathering of WA based Forum members has been found. Any chance of installing a fridge in there?

Well I tried for a reddy but guess what - you got away with it. I must have given you a greeny recently, for some inexplicable reason . That'll teach me to be nice.

    Oh well, youll keep.
