Default Low Seat with Japanese influence

I had a request to build a low seat for a young boy.

The family often sit on the floor and eat at a coffee table in the loungeroom.

The Taunton foot stool has a nice shape and I thought the dimensions would be about right for sitting at a coffee table.

I remember seeing a Japanese style stool carved by David marks and the curved parts look good and should make the seat more comfortable.

The mortices were cut on the morticer. A tilting table would have made it easier for the angled mortices.

Tenons were cut on the tablesaw.
I assembled the seat and legs and marked the location and angles for the brace.

I penciled a few different shapes for the seat with the sculptured rocking chair style seat and long curve the preferred options.

The long curve seemed more appropriate for a low seat. I carved the seat and legs while they were dry assembled.

After the parts were glued I added wedges to the tenons for extra strength.

    Default Low seat finished

    Thanks Artme and Woody1.
It turned out pretty nice. The curved legs with a bit of figure look good.

With a bit more care I could have avoided the tearout on the mortices. Everything else was was OK.

It is very sturdy and I think you could sit on the end without it tipping over.

Dimensions were based on the wide Rose Butternut board that I had on hand.

Length 500mm.........big enough for a large adult and probably would be better to come back to 400mm for a child.
    Width 220mm..........feels comfortable
Height 240mm.........I hope it suits their coffee table. Mine is 450mm high and I think the seat is a comfortable height for it.

It has a few coats of Danish Oil. It should get plenty of buffing as a seat!
