lucky find (i think)
dropping my daughter home the other night i came accross this in a council cleanup
king size head and foot
2 x rails
the whole thing has been painted green (yuk)
someone had tried to sand through the paint and must of given up
i found that under the paint the inset panels have had some scenery type painting on done on it
under all the paint the timber looks a lot like beech
being interested in woodcarving i thought i may clean it all up back to a raw state and recarve all the patterns
anybody have any thoughts on age / period
and any help on restoration
cheers

Being King Size, 6' wide, indicates that it's not that old, certainly not antique anyway and I think you will find that the 'paintings' are more likely to be transfers.
Not saying it was not a good find but looks more like something from the Franco Cozzo collection, or your Sydney equivalant.
Paint stripper and/or a heat gun would probably be a good starting point.
With bed widths, era, original doubles were 4' then progressed to 4'6", Queen and King are more likely to be from the past 30 years.Stupidity kills. Absolute stupidity kills absolutely.

Sorry to be critical but I think I'd put it back where it came from
But maybe the heat gun will expose some nice mdf you could cut up and use somewhere! If at first you don't succeed, give something else a go. Life is far too short to waste time trying.

I rekon you might be on to a winner, ( if you like oldy worldy type stuff) If you like the design and style have a play and try and restore it, even if its not the real deal.

thanks for the replies
after a little more peeling of paint
i found that theres a painting of flowers and trees
all these have been painted over what looks like gold leaf
doesnt seem to be a transfer
the scrolls on the legs are all goldleaf and black
antique white gloss type main borders
the timber looks very much like beech (not MDF)
not sure if king or big queen size
it is 120mm wider than my queen size bed
cheers

It's an odd size, must have paid the 50c and went for the upsize
King Size is 12" wider than a queen which is 6" wider than a double which is 18" wider than a single which is 3'.
Forgive the imperial but thats what I know them as; single 3'-double 4'6"-Queen5'-King 6'Stupidity kills. Absolute stupidity kills absolutely.

Just give paint remover ago, if it's crap wood throw it on the heap, if it's good wood clean it up with a toothbrush.

Beautiful find. I kind of like the painted finish... albeit with a nicer colour and some delicate little gold scroll work. Besides, even if the wood is nice getting the paint out of all those fiddly bits will be hell. If you do it I would recommend just carefull hand scraping as with a sharpened knife, stripper and heat guns might be too severe. We are still sleeping on a beautiful maple double bed I got off the street fifteen years ago.
