Mahjong Racks
On a recent visit to my parents house, I arrived while my Mother and her friends were playing their Sunday afternoon Mahjong game. They play every Sunday at her house, and Fridays are at someone elses house.
My Mum asked me if I could make her a new set of racks for the tiles. The others chimed in, all saying the racks that were available to buy were mostly poor quality and not well designed. A set of 4 racks were priced between $30 and $60, they considered them expensive for what they got.
Taking into consideration, their suggestions of what would make a good rack, I made this set out of some Blackbean, my Father and I milled about 25 years ago.
They are 430mm long, 62mm wide, and about 26mm high. I cut the shape entirely on the tablesaw, I set the blade to 20 degrees to make the angled cuts.
Then cleaned up all faces using my new dovetailed infill smoother that I made for the 20-21 Plane Challenge, and a 1" HNT Gordon rebate plane.
Both planes performed flawlessly, and were a joy to use.
Blackbean is a lot easier to work than most of the timber I use, so a pretty well perfect finish was easily achieved off both planes.
I plan to give them a few coats of homebrew Danish Oil, and maybe a coat of wax.
Hopefully I will have them to my Mum in time for this Sundays game, so I can get some feedback on them. I plan to make some more sets to distribute amongst her friends.

They are great and good use of 'the rock'.
You also gave me an idea for a gift for a friend too. But can you elaborate what are the criteria for a good rack? What were they looking for?

Hi CK, they like to use the big tiles, some of the bought racks were too small and the tiles would easily fall off if the table was bumped. One example I was shown, had the angled rebate cut at more than 90 degrees, so the tiles would teeter back and forth on the lower face and the back face, this really annoyed them. It was suggested and angle of 90 or even 88 degrees would be perfect. I went with 90.
The bought racks were mostly made from cheap Pine, roughly finished, and usually given a wipe with some coloured stain.
I will update this thread after they have used these racks, and given feedback as to the size and angle.Brad.

Brad
Majong is an intriguing game and that is a great little project. Good to see something from the plane challenge now in everyday use (well, occasional days anyway).

That plane looks gorgeous. I really admire you guys who have the patience and dedication to make your own tools, and make them well. Great job.
