    Smile Mahogany sofa bookcase

    Hi.

This is a pic of my very first project. Not my design but lots of elbow grease in the finish

Sailor, for a first project that is great. Even for a 100th project it would still be Bl00dy fantastic.Well done.

    Sailor,

Well done - this is really nice piece, let alone your first. Of course, you have set the bar pretty high for the next one

I like the design - well balanced with nice clean lines. If I can be so bold .... where did you get the design.

I think it would look great in red gum - something that is pretty plentiful up my way.

Bunyip, the design came from Australian Woodsmith #27 April/May 2003. Im sure it would look great in a darker colour.
Cliff, The finish is French polish i sanded down to 2500 and the finish is mirror like i then put neils EEE wax over that. If you look closely at the picture you can actually see a reflection off the shelves.
    Gordon, See Above
    Major Panic,
The Face frame was made from Utile a type of mahogany and the rest from Fijian Mahogany.

Actually a bit of a story about Fijian Mahogany, apparently when the british arrived there in the early days they decided it would be a good place to grow mahogany so they brought along seeds from the Brazillian mahogany tree and planted out in plantations. Well, the british obviously left and also left behind the plantations that are now being harvested!
The fijian mahogany is not as dark as its mother the brazillian mahogany but then again its lots cheaper!

    Regards

    Steve

Great work steve, really, but I'm a bit confused.......

How is it possible to make something like that as your first project?

Did you go and buy a full machine set up worth thousands?

My first few projects have been a dodgy table to practice M&T, a knife block, a chopping board, a towel rack a few storage projects for the shed and other small bits and bobs. I find it staggering that people here present these fantastic pieces as their first project.

Perhaps it's because I'm working mostly by hand. If thats the result you can get without developed skills maybe I should go buy a TS, BS and Buzzer! (Or am I just crap?)

    Cheers
