Default My Moxon Vice using Shoulder Vice Screw

Here is my Moxon vice effort using the Shoulder Vice Screw from McJing. They advertise it as a 1" screw, but when measured, it was 25mm, which makes it a lot easier to find a 25mm auger and Forstner bit, rather than the Empirical units. Also the bronze bush was readily available in metric sizes

I used hard, dense Leopard Wood, 130 x 678 x 35 for three of the boards, with a spacer in between the two boards at the back. I have never had so many splinters as with this timber, other than wenge. The whole thing weighs 15kg, and I am a bit sore and sorry after working with this for 3 days.

Adding the 35mm OD bronze bush to the front chop definitely complicated the construction, as did trying to drill a 25mm hole dead straight through 4 x 35mm timber for the screws, while staying concentric with the 35mm hole for the bronze bush in the front chop board. My drill press only has a 70mm vertical travel. I would drill through one and a half boards, then leaving the auger in the hole, would raise the drill press table. Fiddly work, but worked out well.

To make concentric holes 35 and 25mm, I used a 35mm pine disc with centre point marked to locate the centre for the 25mm auger bit after the 35mm hole was started with a Forstner bit. Worked out well. The screws slid smoothly through the 140mm thick timbers when assembled together.

I put a 45 degree bevel on the ends of the front chop, to enable one to get a finger grip and pull the board away from the rear one.

Still wondering whether to cut a 45 degree bevel on the upper outside edge of the front chop board, to make it easier to cut half blind dovetails with the pin board in the vertical position in the vice

I purchased 2.4mm thick rubberised cork, but that is too thick, so am waiting on 1.4mm thick sheets to fit to both faces.

The vice has a maximum opening of 100mm, and a maximum workpiece width of 460mm, good size for 400mm wide drawers

The vice handles were cut to length so they did not overlap, and turned to fit the end caps, courtesy of the local Townsville Wood Turners Association

The Leopard Wood was so hard that I needed my local car mechanic to press the slightly oversized bronze bush into the front chop board using his hydraulic press.
