    Default Nakashima inspired Dining Table

    Hey all,
A couple weeks ago I finished my dining table project that resembles more or less a Nakashima Conoid dining table.
There are some minor differences but all in all I was shooting for that design since I love it but can't afford the original.
Its done from local (Michigan) black walnut (I had that tree made into lumber 4 years ago). Its 80" long by 46" wide.
The finish is Epifanes rubbed finish varnish over Epifanes clear varnish.
    Enjoy!

Really nice piece - I like the way a pretty solid piece can be made to look like it floats. Also, the attention to detail and finish earns top marks.

    Thanks guys!
I appreciate the feedback. Building the table was actually pretty straight forward. Still it took me 4 months of late nights and some weekend work.
To be fair though, I have outsourced the glueup and sanding of the two bookmarked slabs for the top to a local woodworking company. They have a 55"wide CNC sander that was able to swallow the whole slab and flatten it out. That alone saved me at least another 4 weeks of work and still came out better that anything that I would have tried.
The underside of the top needed quite a bit of black dyed epoxy fill to stabilize some wormy and rotten areas. Gladly only small portions of these defects show through the topside.
I'm surprised that I haven't seen many other DIY folks make this type of table. Maybe because it really polarizes people. They either love it or hate it. I love the design, so I'm happy.
    Thanks again,
    Alex

I like it, I think it's an awesome table, looks nice and tight. I just finished making a dining table using hand tools and to get the top flat was a humungus job using hand planes. I like the top of yours, nice grain pattern. You should be proud of that baby.

Wow looks great, I'm making a similar one, do you have any plans for the base?
