    Default My first "nice" project

    Hi all,

I am still fairly new to woodworking, about 6 months in and have very little time but the hook in deep.

I thought I would share my first project where I really made an effort to try and make it "nice" - a saw till. All my first efforts have been, out of necessity, mostly garage items to fit tools etc. All made with hand tools except a drill to make a hole for the dowel. Includes my first two dovetails ever! One went well... the other not so much!

I need to fiddle with a few items and just hot-glued the two pieces that hold the saw blades until I get a feel for how I want them permanently.

Most saw tills I have seen have a tray or such like. I avoided it because, first, I knew it would just be a magnet for clutter. Secondly, it won't gather dust and crud. I have left the handle rest flare out a bit to hold a coping saw and gent saw with a lanyard. I might add another small dowel up higher for a bag with spare blades for the coping saw and perhaps room to hang another small saw.

The materials were a laminated panel from Bunnings - I think only $34 - "eucalyptus grandis" and the slats are DAR Tassie oak also from Bunnings. I am an office worker type who cannot get out during the day much but I managed to go to a good timber shop and found a piece of Qld maple that looks nice for the saw blade holding pieces. They are a bit of a mess because I tried to chamfer the sides with a chisel bit woefully miscalculated. But after a week I just felt I had to put it together!

A saw till is a handy addition to the shed. We all make some mistakes but they are an important part of learning so just keep building stuff.

That's fantastic. Good to see you have already given up hope of only having two saws. They do breed when the lights are off.

Don't sweat your dovetails. You have done well to attempt them and have at least one good one to show for it. Many of us waited far longer before attempting then, and I certainly wish I had tried them sooner..

Funnily enough I actually had a third small saw in the letterbox from ebay. I had forgotten about it. So I'm already out of room for the smaller saws!

Many thanks for kind comments. Still always just working towards progress.
