Bad News
I learnt in the week that my supply of free timber is to come to an end(ater two years). It appears that our local council has put a banning order on the builder for using his residence for business use (having the skip ).
However I do have around 25 cu.ft of stock so should keep me going for some time, and then my weary bones will most probably need a rest anyway.
Late starting woodwork here this morning the puddles have ice formed so I know the workshop is going tobe coldwoody U.K.

I went to a school near Paignton almost 60 years ago. Montpelier? Is it still there?
Did woodwork classes as an after school option when I was there.

Day 5
Day 5
Didn't go near the workshop until 2.30pm, weather was very cold, ice had formed on puddles. When I eventually did get in the garage, put on the fan heater and went and stood by one of the alli. garage doors which was like a radiator from the afternoon sun. I usually moan about the doors being too hot (in the summer).
Anyway I eventually got down to work and marked up the legs for morticing, I found that I had to keep making corrections because the rails are not central, therefore care needs to be taken to avoid incorrect marking. Also marked up the tenons and had to be alert because of the same problems. All tenons cut by hand this time (1/4") and 2 mortices chopped with a 1/4" firmer chisel because there is not much depth. The final two mortices for bottom rail which run with the grain were routered on my jig. The tenons for the bottom rail need finishing to fit but will be left until tomorrow.
By this time my nose had started to drip because of the cold atmosphere, (ex englishmen most probably know the situation). So called it a day, and things not looking particularly brilliant tomorrow, minus 2 forecast tonight.
Thoughts on weather turned out to be correct and snow possible the forecasters say for the end of the week.
Pic of frost Sunday morning, so anticipating another late start today.woody U.K.

Day 6
Day 6,
Temperature struggled to 5 centigrade even by lunchtime, so called it a day. Posting some pictures of my old model railway which I constructed around 18 years ago, and because one of my grandsons is paying a visit shortly, I thought I had better have a clean and tidy up.woody U.K.

Day 7
Day 7
Temperature going back up again for 3/4 days 10 plus centigrade so quite comfortable to work in providing there is not a gale blowing.
Finished the front rails which had been worked by hand, and had to use a chisel to get some clean shoulders. I think in future I shall always cut these shoulders even if small on the table saw, thereby getting accurate and precise lengths.
Put a narrow blade in the band saw and cut the bottom leg shapes plus a bow front on the bottom rail. Finished off the cuts with the spokeshave and wet and dry wrapped round a dowel.
There is a photograph of my half inch chisel and I thought I would point out that the backside of the tool has been flattened on abrasive paper and the front bevel has a 25 and then a 20 degree ground edge. These angles make a really sharp tool, (I do have another 1/2" chisel with the normal 30/25 degree angles for rougher work)
Pics show progress again to date. (If anyone shows interest with the model railway pictures I will post these pictures on the nothing woodwork site.woody U.K.

Day 8
Day 8 (good job I don't do woodwork for a living)
Day 8
Short day today (I'm getting lunch again). See first photograph. The recipe and more pictures are going to be posted at the "Nothing to do with woodworks site" if interested. Leeks with chicken breasts.
The frames are mainly complete (joints anyway) and I am hunting around the workshop for timber to make the t/g panel sides. I locate a piece of 4x4 which has quite a few machined router cut-outs but I am able to salvage a 3ft length of 4x1, it would have been two pieces but the bandsaw was incorrectly re- set up after doing the leg shapes yesterday. I forgot to run a test piece through the saw and paid the price. Found some more odds and ends and reckon after cleaning up and putting through the planer/thicknesser I should have enough to do panels for both sides. The rear panel I am l putting in a 1/4" ply, saves weight, which I think is necessary for bedside tables as they do need constantly pulling out.
So, half hour morning and just over the hour after lunch produced timbers as per pictures attached.woody U.K.

Day 9
DAY 9
DAY 9
Very frustrating! The deal I cleaned up yesterday for the side panels turned out to be too narrow. The 4" pieces meant my side panels would have needed 4 pieces to complete sides. The first nightstand has 3 pieces and I did not want to proceed if furniture did not match. There is one consolation, the 4" stuff will come in for the base of the cabinet.
So cut some more 8x2 stuff down on the two saws, put them through the planer/thicknesser and then had to reject some pieces again. There was a lose knot on one pair of boards and on another board the knot wouldn't come clean off the thicknesser. So, I cut some more 8x2 down and at the end of the afternoon I had a lot of timber pieces lying around with pencil marks but no progress for two days hard labour, tomorrow is shopping day and visitors arriving at the weekend.
Thank goodness we've got a houseful of furniture!
Some pictures below to show I have been trying.woody U.K.

Day 10
DAY 10
DAY 10
Went shopping today and Mrs. Woody u.k. opened another savings account titled Australian holiday fund, also with a contribution form yours truly, the proceeds of my old PC sell off.
Whilst out I checked out the DIY stores looking for another laminate top to match other bedroom furniture items. Somehow I don't think I am going to be lucky, the existing suite is now over 20 years old and these tops seem to have gone all parquet flooring type patterns over here. The colour matches were OK though. One top that did attract us was real oak 27mm thick and cut about 30mm width stick (butcher top style). Problem £115 per metre around $260 aus.dollar. So wondering where we can find a skip with this waste timber!!!
I did manage an hour in the workshop cutting dadoes for panels on the frames. I found care was needed because the rebates are not centred on legs.
As mentioned earlier in the week we have visitors arriving (including a 7 year old grandson who wants to get his hands on my model railway, from which he has been banned on previous visits) this means my activities will stop for a few days.
Pictures attached show dadoes being cut on my mortice jig
together with photograph of my sociable workspace!!!
Who has a more untidy workshop?woody U.K.
