    Default "Two nightstands"

For my fifth project two night stands.

    Wood: blackbean
Side panels and top are bandsaw cut veneers on MDF.
Finish: Two coats danish oil, several coats ubeaut hard shellac (great stuff), lightly rubbed out with 0000 steel wool and finished with Ubeaut EEE (very nice stuff indeed).

SWMBO loves them... so she says.

I have included zip file that has dimensioned drawings for those that care (some variation did occur). Some features did not get done as I ran out of usable wood (blackbean obtained was a bit split in places), namely trim under top. And was a bit to scared to try the inlay pattern.

    Phil

    Good looking stands.

What is the program to run the zip file with the DBG extension.

two things further: what finish did you use and is there a stain present on the timber?

And: this is in no way a criticism, but did you consider a black or florentine bronze knob?

Excelent work Phil... Clean and crisp, well done, one of the nicer peices iv seen here. My only gripe is for you to trim the white felt back a little so it cant be seen, its annoying Blackbean is without doubt the most underrated timber we have, but dont tell to many people that, otherwise everyone will start using it. And its great you used your own bandsawn veneers, i wish more wood use them.

Nice work Phil, beautifully proportioned pieces. I like the edge treatment on the tops too, something different.

Blackbean is a good looking timber, and it makes an excellent contrasting timber for stuff like crows ash. I steer clear of it mostly.... due to bleeding nose and coughing up blood after sanding! Take care with the dust.

    Cheers,

    Seriph1:

Blackbean okay to work with. Dust is bit toxic. I wore a respirator plus had dusty going all the time and also air filtration in room.I had sore throat + bit of pus/blood for few days after brief exposure using trimmer.

It might just be my opinion but it seemed to dull chisels quicker than other woods.

The handles were chosen silver casue the black just didn't look right for some reason. I think it had something to do with the blackbean surface being extremly reflective. Sort of highlighting lighter reflections. Also some boards had strips of white/silver in them. I thought it was from my tools at first but I think it is in the grain.

Butcher, Is it the looks or the health risks the reason for your not like working with it? It is just that everyone seems to say this.

Fanstastic chests, Phil. That timber is beautiful, and the design is great.

Agree with the minor gripes about the felt and the too-dainty knobs.

Thanks for the pics. I'm going to have to get my hands on some blackbean. Anyone know if it's available in Adelaide?

Very nice, Phil. Like the way you've done the drawer fronts and the bevelled edges on top.
