    Default Norfolk(?) pine mallet.

All hand shaped from square stock using a No.5 plane.

That would be a great gavel for meetings!
If you're right=if it is Norfolk, might not be too bash-worthy on a carver's bench.

Rare though it may be, I really like the extension of the handle through the head.
Must have been tricky to carve the grooves with the #5.

Try to borrow a spokeshave for the shaping.
I think that you would really enjoy that.

Hehe, obviously I used a series of files for the grooves. Actually it's quite strong so perhaps it's not Norfolk.

If you had taken the blade out of your #5 and used it like a skew to cut the grooves,
that would have been a nauseating display of carving talent!

Species: Every time that I look at the handle, the arrangement of the growth
rings just doesn't look right for a gymnosperm (incl conifers) at all. There has to be
some significance to the brown speckles that I like to think that I'm seeing.

If you have any sort of a scrap, Tasman Pulp & Paper should be able to identify it easily.
    They still in business?
