    Default First paid project

I made this toy box for a co-worker. It's my first paid project. She was happy and has another project for me to do.

Nice work, do you have anymore pics? Close ups?
What type of timber did you use? How did you do the box joins etc.

I was so excited about finally figuring out how to post the picture that I guess I forgot a few details. The box is constructed of Birch plywood with splined miter joints. The spline slots were hand cut (took about 3 hours) with splines cut from black walnut and then planed flush. The top piece that covers the edge of the plywood is make of maple. It also has castors so it can be rolled around. This was the only picture I took. My memory card was full and I was on my way to deliver the box.

    Nice box. That's a lot o' splines for hand-cutting.

The box is 30x18x18 (inches). I didn't feel comfortable trying to cut the splines on my table saw. I'm working on a jig for the next time I decide to go crazy, but it was a nice darkside indulgence.

Don't you get a good feeling the first time someone pays for your woodwork. Until then, you might think it's OK, but you don't really know until someone puts up some money.

Can't believe you cut all those splines by hand. You have more patience than me. Great job though.

I know what you mean. I've just cut some splines for some small side tables (400 x 350 x 400) on the TS, and that was as big as I'd want to do. Anything bigger, and I'd be making a jig for the circular handheld power saw.

Those splines look quite thick. Did you define the edges with two saw cuts, then chisel out in between?

I once made a box with splines by doing a single sawcut (just the kerf), and planing some stock down until it just fit into the kerf (1mm or so). Much easier than chiseling out the waste---only one sawcut per spline.

Thats exactly what I did. The splines are 1/4 inch thick. With the size of the box I thought they would look better that way. Next time I'll build a jig big enough to run it over my table saw.
