Peach Box WIP
My little girl (8) collected some shells off the beach the other day & made a cardboard display box & covered it with glad wrap. I was impressed to say the least, my baby did a great job but the cardboard cracker box was just not up to the job so I thought I would help her a bit.
Pics so far, hope you like them.

Good on you Steve - great box on the way, and a devoted dad (even more precious - what a lucky little girl!)! Are you going to post the final pic with her collection all in it? We have an 8 y.o. daughter, too!
Cheers,
Jill

Thanks Jill, The shell collection changes pretty regularly as we live near the beach, but the current one is pretty good, so I will see what I can do with the camera to capture the colours.
Couple more pic, I have oiled it with danish & rubbed it in with 600 grit on the R/O Sander, the buffed by hand.
The Peach has a wonderful grain & is really nice to work with. My mate gave it to me for the pot belly mistake rectifer, but I thought I would just have a look at it first. glad I did.

all finished
I love this type of project. It is not finishing up with a little box that does it for me though, it is starting off with a log that was bound to become fire wood. Peach tree is wonderful to work with, quit hard yet fairly easy to work & a bit of oil brings out the colour & grain. Thankfully, I still have a few small logs left, but I really need to get a bandsaw to break it down into a useable size.
The finished product complete with perspex lid.

That's lovely, Ticky!
I've often wanted to do this, but have been afraid that if not fully dried it would split. Did you work with dried timber, and if not was there any splits in the log prior to milling it?

DBP,
The tree was dead when my mate moved into his house & he finally got around to cutting it down, so it was well dryed when I got it.
There was a big split in the log, & I tryed to more or less cut the log in 15mm boards along the same direction as the split. When I trimed the boards, I was able to get the most out of them by triming on slight angles. only 1 board was too bad to use.
The box does have some split timber in it, so I used it on the bottom where it is not seen. I thought about filling them with epoxy, but decided to re name them. For "split" or "crack", please read "Character"

Hi Ticky,
Yes, Peach is a lovely wood to work with, if you can get beyond the cracks as you did. I was working on a small piece a little while ago and was very dismayed to hear it crack, 5 minutes before I was going to start putting on the finish
I love the box you've built for your daughter, it has a lovely colour and figure to it.
cheers

Thanks Wendy, & I didn't even need to find anyone to blame this time, It is a lot easier when you don't have to colour them in when you finish building them.
