Hi All
I have used these forums as a great reference guide over the last month as I have been building my pergola and deck, so i thought i would share some photos of the project as it nears completion.
Thanks to those who posted something i found useful/helpful.

roof went up on the weekend, and decking started.
i hate working with iron - laying the colorbond sheets wasn't too bad, but fixing the guttering and flashing - ugggh. I much prefer working with timber!

Will be having any balustrate around the edges?
Coming along nicely, good work.

Thanks Harry. No plans at present for balustrade - its only 300mm off the ground at the highest point - might add a step at that point!
but who knows what the future holds (the budget is stretched enough at present!)
Lara is just outside of Geelong, Victoria.
While I am at it - as I lay the decking boards, I am increasingly paranoid about keeping it square/even/etc. Anyone got some good hints and tips for laying a deck with best results?

got the last of the decking boards down today. had a few delays as I had to lay some storm water pipes under the deck, and I had to get the local mitre 10 to 'rip' the last decking board for me, as the last only needed to be half the width of a board.
I think it has come up pretty good. be good to cut the ends off, and do all the other finishing touches.

Nice work! A few questions mate;
Did you need council approval, if you were just gonna do the deck (no roof). And, did you do anything to pevent weeds, grass etc. growing under the deck? Like a weed mat or something?
Cheers
Ben

Hi Ben.
I got a council permit for the deck and pergola - big waste of $$$ ($500!), but i did get something out of it i guess. One of my stump holes failed inspection because when the inspector looked down the side, he could tell it wasnt natural (i didn't notice). he told me to dig the 500mm hole deeper until i found something, because "something is down there".
I dug down to a meter and found the storm water pipe, and dug a little more until i was back into untouched terra super firma. had i not done this, i doubt anything would have happened, but still, i feel like i got something out of the $500...
as for preventing weeds. i removed 150mm of top soil/powder (i dunno what it is, but it ain't really dirt!), and considering the deck is undercover, i don't think there will be enough light/moisture under it for anything to grow.
