...joint collar....cont....
Pict 1 - Faced off the excess maple piece.
Pict 2 - Ready to part off
Pict 3 - Final piece (in the ruff) on top of the headstock.
I will need to make 2 of these pieces (for the 2 shafts of the cue), plus one for the joint part of the butt (the bottom half of the cue). Its a bit of friggin' around, but at the end of the day, it should turn an ok cue, into a fairly darn good cue.
PS - Tommorow night, I will probably spend most of my time cleaning up again in the shop, as its a real mess. May not get a lot done.

Purple - I don't want to divert the thread before you finish but I've been waiting for someone else to ask - - what sort of lathe is that????? It's obviously a specialized setup for your work but can you fill us in on it's origins etc???

G'day Purpleheart,
I was going to ask the same thing this morning, but TITT beat me to it.

The lathe is called a "Cue-Smith Delux".
I imported it from the States from a company called "Cue-Man Billiards".
Its a real great lathe if you want to build a few cues, as it does all the functions you need.
I also have a regular wood lathe, which I do sanding and finishing on.
Cheers.

Not much progress tonight.
Pict 1 - Rosewood butt now with purpleheart on 2 sides. Also, glued together another joint ring.
Pict 2 & 3 - Got trimmer set up to cut the point groove in the bubinga cue. Might do that tommorow night.

All I managed to do the other night was to turn down a second joint collar for the birds eye cue.
Now I am glueing up a similar collar for the "butt: section.
If Darwins theory of evolution is correct, the woodworker of the future will have 4 arms. If not, we will continue to improvise (Pict 1)
Pict 2 - The gluey mess, can't wait till its a finished product.

G'day Purpleheart,
This for me has been one of the most interesting WIPs and am eagerly waiting for the final turning of each cue to see how they turn out.
Top stuff.

One job I often seem to put off more than I should is changing the belt on the sander. Its a bitch of a job, since my workshop is so small, and the sander is wedged way over in the corner. Often, I think I spend more time fighting on with the flogged out belt, than I would if I spent the time and changed the belt, then got on with the job.
So, tonight, its a new belt. (Pict 1)
Picts 2,3 and 4 show the Rosewood cue, with the layer of silver ash over the core, now with purpleheart on 2 sides, sanded back and ready for another glue-up. As I have yet to cut and prepare the purpleheart, this will have to wait until tommorow.
Pict 5 - The new belt after the operation....still plenty of live left.
On a side note, after some measuring, I have noted I cannot cut a "point" or "v-groove" in the bubinga cue. Cutting the groove deep enough to remove the "problem area" would mean cutting into the "centre" I have established for the cue. This would not be a problem if the cue was "bigger", but it is pretty much the size I want it now, and I don't want to have to "Search" for that centre later. I think I will have to "Mill" the side again. (Which will produce another butterfly pattern, rather than a point).
However, I now would like to do some points in one of the other cues (Probably the rock maple cue), just so I can include the proceedure in this thread.
Cheers.

Also note, it puts a lot of pressure on me not to stuff up, as it would be easier to take the photos along the way, then post them once the cues were finished. (Than way I could hide my mistakes). This way you all want to see 4 finished cues at the end. (And I did warn at the beginning that this might not happen) (Tomato Stakes....)
But cuemaking is about making mistakes (its not a clinical perfect artform),and then solving them. I have already made a few "errors" and it will mean more work in the end to cure them, but ultimately they lead to a better (or fancier) cue.
Please keep the feedback coming......
Cheers...
