Default Pressed tin photo album cabinet

    Hi everyone

Tom and I made a cabinet out of that Tuncester timber (we are really scraping the bottom of the reject pile now... bring on the new load! This stuff was gnarly and one species in particular was very splintery).

The doors are pressed ceiling tin (from Tom's parents' ceiling in Mittagong before they renovated).

I have to say that this cabinet was a pain to make. Legs - no problem - simply made up a jig to get the taper that we wanted and ran them over the table saw. Mortice and tenon joinery for the skeleton and then used the T and G flooring along the sides and back of the cabinet. The top was biscuit joined together (recycled red gum) - but somehow between scraps of paper of my drawings and actually using a tape measure - we managed to make it a tad short in width  . So we joined a "back bit" (I'm sure there is a technical name for this), which looks not bad I suppose.

The fun then started with the doors. Tom cut the tin with the angle grinder whilst I mitred the doors and dowelled them together. We ran the timber over the table saw to make a groove for the metal to sit in - it must have pulled in a bit far when I clamped it all together at the bottom of the doors, as there is a gap. Not happy Jan. We've got guests staying this weekend, so we'll probably remake the doors after they leave - I just wanted to get it in place (and see if we at least got the measurement right for the place at the end of the hallway where it is sitting).

The cabinet has three shelves that house photo albums inside them - hence why the cabinet is quite long.

Finished with Danish oil and wax - although not really finished - I dare say it will have new doors next weekend...

    Cheers
    Dan and Tom

    Hi Dan & Tom,
Love it, as usual!! Great recycling once again, and the colour of that timber is beautiful.

    Cheers,

You must have almost filled your home with beautiful furniture by now, you two?!!! Maybe you'll have to build a bigger home soon to fit it all in?!!! I love it, as I do all of your creations!

    Cheers,

    Jill
